Osteoporosis: An Exercise Guide

Osteoporosis: An Exercise GuideMs. Bissinger's book, Osteoporosis: An Exercise Guide is a elegantly simple guide to help prevent and treat osteoporosis.

As a physician working with patients at risk for osteoporosis, I have found the book to be a great educational tool. The exercises are easy to perform thanks to its concisely written and well-illustrated format.

In addition to a complete exercise program, Ms. Bissinger has included a section on posture and body mechanics. This section is an important complement to any exercise regimen. The way one lives their daily life is crucial in preventing back and spinal injuries.

Thanks to Ms. Bissinger for her terrific book.

This book is only 27 pages long. It is more of a booklet than a book. However, it has great exercises (about 15 in all) with well-drawn illustrations and easy to understand text so there's no problem doing the excercises, and you can easily incorporate most of them into day-to-day living. There is valuable information for anyone dealing with low bone density. I learned quite a lot about which exercises are beneficial for a person with low bone density, and (even more importantly), which exercises could cause injury.

I was recently diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and learned the things I absolutely shouldn't do (like bend forward from the waist) during physical therapy, so I knew as soon as I looked through this book that it was safe for someone with my condition to use. I highly recommend this book, but would also say that you should have your doctor look it over and give approval. If you have osteoporosis, you should always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

It is usually hard to do exercises from a book rather than a video but this one works! The exercises are well explained and are accompanied by drawings showing both the correct and incorrect way to do them. The book is well written and easy to follow. It provides valuable information about the types of things you should and should not do if you have osteoporosis. Being recently diagnosed this was something I was concerned about and this book addressed all my concerns.

Women need all the help they can get these days for osteoporosis, especially since prescription drugs are becoming an ominous choice for many. Love the simplicity of this book and one can get started immediately with the exercises, since it is a small book, to the point and gives helpful hints. What's really nice are the illustrations, since one doesn't have to think about alignment but simply look at the pictures. I am using these exercises consistently and will happily share with friends. This book is not only appropriate for people with bone density issues, but contains information that can benefit most anyone.

Feeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childho

Feeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and BeyondI will have to agree with another reviewer who says this book is good for beginners. For those who have a fairly decent knowledge of nutrition and healthier alternatives and those who did their research while pregnant, on the other hand, this book may simply be more of the same.

While I enjoyed what the book had to say regarding the "magical" properties of herbs etc, my largest complaint would be the lack of recipes throughout the book. There are some, and while the text does not call itself a cookbook, I believe more recipes, with a background on why they are the best choice for your child, would have been more suited to my own personal needs. A lot of the information is what you would find in any pregnancy guide, magazine or website.

If you have already had children or are one who is extremely health conscious, you are not likely to find a host of profound information in this book that you have not come across previously. That being said, it is certainly a viable guide for those who want to change their nutritional lifestyles for themselves, their kids and their environment (if they have not already done so).

This book has everything! If you're like me and a picky eater, you've probably wondered how to get your kids to eat things you don't eat. I was fed a very limited variety of foods as a child, and as a result I've always been very picky. This book explains why me and countless other Americans prefer the taste of packaged, processed foods loaded with salt and sugar, over fresh, wholesome, good food. So what did people do before the bland, jarred baby food of the industrial revolution hit store shelves? Read this book to find out!

What is included:

The definition of "baby" food

How to eat while pregnant to maximize the chances of your baby being an adventurous eater later on

How to introduce foods in a way your baby will find intriguing

Recipes

How we inadvertently teach our toddlers to become picky eaters

Facts about what's actually in baby food

How jarred baby food came to be in the first place

How to approach eating as "fun" and create enjoyable food experiences

You not only become educated on what to feed your baby, you become educated on the entire process of how consumers came to depend on Gerber and other baby food companies as the only way to feed a baby. I was always told that it wasn't safe to introduce too many varieties of fruits and veggies to a baby at once, but this book dispels that myth and so many others.

this is one of my favorite baby feeding books! forget the bland, jarred purees with BPA leaching caps, the constipating cereals, and the different "stages" that commercial baby food manufacturers try to sell us. dr. greene shows us why it is so much better to make our own baby foods, and how easy it can be! dr. greene (like dr. sears) also recommends the using a "Treasure Tray," a fun tray filled with healthy finger foods for baby (or toddler or even older) and letting him/her explore different foods, tastes and textures. we also always let our baby nibble off of our plates, and did what is called 'child led introduction to solids' and she loved it! today, at 3 1/2, she eats any and everything i put in front of her-including kale and broccoli.

I ordered this book because I really enjoyed reading Raising Baby Green. Feeding Baby Green actually covers a lot of the same information covered in Raising Baby Green, but goes into a bit more detail. I pretty much skipped the whole first section on what to eat during pregnancy, since Raising Baby Green already covered the topic.

Overall, the book is practical and useful. I especially liked that Dr. Greene covered formula/bottle feeding. I had not expected to need that section, but after having had serious problems while breastfeeding my son, I was thankful that he gave suggestions for keeping bottle feeding as "green" as possible. However, I think he also covered that topic in Raising Baby Green, as well.

In short, I did like this book, and I found it to be helpful. If I had to do it over again, though, I would check out Feeding Baby Green from the library and buy Raising Baby Green, instead of the other way around.

Baby food is a myth. At first glance, this seems like an overly simple statement, or maybe even an outlandish sales pitch. But as I continued to read, the weight of Dr. Green's bold statement hit me. Does he realize he's going completely contrary to a foundational belief in our society? What are his intentions and how does aim to support such a claim? The answers to those questions quickly became clear, along with a solution to our ever-growing problem of toxic chemicals in our children's food.

I know you're wondering if it's really a smart idea not to follow the Stage 1, 2 and 3 exactly as you've been told. You're thinking that it will take too long to prepare fresh food for your baby. And then what if you're not sure you can provide your baby with a balanced diet?

Drop the worry, let the fear go and dump your pre-conceived ideas about how babies should be fed. Dr. Greene has orchestrated an amazing and doable journey for you. Feeding Baby Green is so much more than a "how to" book it's a stolen look into Dr. Greene's own journey to freedom and joyful family meals where baby is included instead of separated.

And those concerns of BPA and toxic preservatives harming your baby's health? They become drastically diminished in a world where you prepare one dinner for the whole family, without the need for jarred and canned baby food. In the process your child will learn how to enjoy healthy, unprocessed food for life.

The Men's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Stronger Body--in 15 Minutes a Day!

The Men's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Stronger Body--in 15 Minutes a Day!The basic idea of this book is to work the body in about 15 minutes.

Here's how you do it. You focus on a few key exercises and move quickly from one exercise to another, with mininal rest time between exercises. Then, you repeat the exercises in a circuit, again with minimal rest.

These workouts work on increasing strength, by building muscle and strong bones, thus burning more fat. These workouts emphasize getting a lean strong body, rather than bodybuilding, and is, therefore, not a general bodybuilding book.

In the number and variety of workouts, this book is excellent. It contains 78 workouts, all 15-minutes long. Some workouts are bodyweight or require dumbbells. Others use a pull-up bar, a barbell, a kettlebell, a medicine ball, a stability (Swiss or large) ball, an exercise band (tubing), a foam roller, a jump rope, a BOSU, a bench, a cable machine, a step, and so on.

Instruction and exercises for each of the workouts vary, but in general, one may do a circuit of 3 to 7 relatively intense exercises, with little or no rest between each exercise. Then, rest for 60 between each circuit. Finally, repeat 2 more circuits.

All exercise photos are large and in color, clearly showing their positions, with descriptions.

I did workout #3 (bodyweight) and I was breathing heavily during the exercise and I did a modified version of workout #7 (dumbell blast 2) and it was intense and made me sweat. I loved the concept of 15 minute workouts and I liked this book.

~~~
If you liked this book, try the women's version of this 15-minutes book. This shows more bodyweight and dumbbell workouts.
If you want just bodyweight exercises, (with no equipment), get this book, "You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises" by Mark Lauren and Joshua Clark. This is excellent in the range of exercises which, again, do not require equipment.
As a young father, my Wife and I do not have much spare time anymore to exercise nor do outdoor trips (hiking, mountain biking,etc.).
We felt very sad about that.
This book of optimized exercises helped us being motivated again by gaining results as impressive as if we were training 3 times longer !!
But don't imagine these are miracle recipes... the basis is that you don't lose time resting between the workouts, so the 15mn are very, I mean very efficient...
Results do come fast and after 2 weeks (training 1 day out of 2, as suggested in the book), I am already feeling my abs recovering their former strentgh, more durably than before. Needless to talk about the thighs and arms and shoulders...
The workouts in this book won't help you build "big" muscles, but they will help you gain EFFICIENT muscles, EFICIENT strength, and endurance.
You just have to complete your weekly workout by one "HIIT" (High Intensity Interval Training), ideally outdoor (in my case: skysurfing/paddling : ) ) and you're done.
And the main benefit is that you have... more spare time to rest between the daily workouts and after each day's workout !
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for awesome (and motivating because of the variety!!) workouts, especially if they don't want to spend hours excercises because of her/his busy lifestyle !
Not to go all Zen on everyone, but the concept of this book and its companion book for women is what's most important here. It's well laid out in chapter 1 "The Genius of the 15 Minute Workout". Simply put, shorter (but very high intensity) workouts are optimal in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Hands down. This book gives you tons of workouts that fit that bill. If you buy in to the concept (as I do), this book is for you. If you prefer to spend your time on the elliptical, then, well, you should still buy this book and change your approach to training :).
I totally agree with the philosophy of this book and have found short, intense workouts to be MUCH more effective in building muscle and burning fat than long, drawn-out gym sessions. (The saved time is quite a plus too.)
This book gives some great circuit routines that will get your heart pumping and your muscles working. There are gym-free total body workouts, which also are great cardio; dumbbell workouts for your upper and lower body; barbell workouts meant to build maximum muscle mass; ab workouts; cardio routines; and more.
I've already tried several of the workout and was surprised at how challenging they were! This book doesn't disappoint!
P.S. I also highly recommend Muscle Myths: 50 Health & Fitness Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making (The Lean Muscle Series) because it straightened out a bunch of confusions I had about how to build muscle, lose fat, and be healthy. I was making quite a few mistakes and didn't even know it!
Want The Men's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Stronger Body--in 15 Minutes a Day! Discount?
I've liked the Men's Health Big Books, but they are big. I tried out the Kindle edition here and it works well all workouts and exercises are hyper linked so that you can quickly get to them. Their pictures display well on my second generation Kindle (with the keyboard). Each exercise does not fit on a single screen even if you make the text small which is a bummer, but less the book's fault.
This is going to be great for traveling. I already have my Kindle and in the hotel, I have many options for working out regardless of the "fitness" room quality and enough variety to make it interesting just what I wanted for this book.
The Joseph H. Pilates Method at Home: A Balance, Shape, Strength, and Fitness ProgramAbsolutely delighted with the clear, concise way this book has been put together for teaching the Pilates method. Excellent photographs to show all positions. A book well suited to the older person especially those wanting to take control of their lazy tummy muscles again. (Tip: I use a child's soccer ball instead of the cushion or bolster which is suggested.) Congratulations to the instructor, author and publisher. A very delighted reader and practitioner at home who did not want to join a class.
My Child Is Sick!: Expert Advice for Managing Common Illnesses and Injuries
My Child Is Sick!: Expert Advice for Managing Common Illnesses and InjuriesThis is soooo useful for those times in the middle of the night to look up symptoms your baby is experiencing to see if it is worthy of calling the doctor and also offers what to do. This is a great resource for any parent and I would definitely recommend. I wish it had come out sooner! Easy read/ reference
This book has the most up-to-date advise. It guides parents through the thought process about how to tell when and where to seek medical help for their child. I am a pediatric nurse and bought this for my grandson.
This book is absolutely wonderful for every household with children. This book was a gift from my pediatric RN nurse mother and it has come in handy multiple times. I've used it a dozen times as a reference and my child is 5 months old. Being a new mom, I tend to ask my mom, the doctor, and look in this book anytime I have a question about my child's health. All three of my references are always the same. The book lays out when to call 911, when to call the doctor right away, when to call within 24 hours, and when to treat at home. It is written by Barton Schmitt, who also wrote the book on pediatric protocols (along with American Academy of Pediatrics). This book will become a staple as a baby shower gift because its so valuable particularly to new mothers like me.
Be the Boss of Your Pain: Self-Care for Kids (Be The Boss Of Your Body)
Be the Boss of Your Pain: Self-Care for KidsComplementary and alternative therapies for pediatric health problems like pain, stress, and sleep are becoming increasingly popular, and the evidence base supporting their use is rapidly growing. The Be the Boss of Your Body self-help manuals are outstanding, first-of-their-kind resources for those interested in integrating complementary and alternative approaches with traditional therapies. Culbert and Kajander's emphasis on children taking control of their problems and their comprehensive attention to body, mind, and spirit are clinically "right on." These manuals are informative, interesting, and highly practical. The content presented is kid-friendly and easy to use. I highly recommend this series to children, families, and clinical practitioners interested in integrative approaches to common pediatric problems and plan to regularly use these manuals in my clinical practice.
This book is used by therapists and families to help children (middle school and older) to manage and be in charge of their pain. Most of the kids have found this very useful. We also encourage parents to read the book so they can coach their child, and the methods work for ANY age. I purchased a second copy because there was so much demand. Well worth the price; well written; engaging and helpful illustations. A very good value for libraries and for health consumers. All the books in this series are well done.
Style on a Shoestring: Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a Fortun
Style on a Shoestring: Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a FortuneIn these tight economic times, many of us don't have the fashion budget that we may have once had. It can be disappointing to the fashionista because a lot of clothes from discount stores look cheap because of the poor quality. For cash-strapped fashionistas who aren't familiar with the thrift stores, they can be overwhelmed by trying to separate the stylish items from the outdated fashions and tacky theme sweaters. Many of us need to know how to stretch our fashion budgets without being overwhelmed and look like we shop in the toniest fashion stores. "Style on a Shoestring" is one of those books that will teach you how to do that.
"Style on a Shoestring" is one of the most comprehensive books about how one can look stylish without spending a fortune or being a slave to the "names". Andy Paige covers nearly everything in a down-to-earth, friendly way.
Here are a few highlights of some of the topics that she covers:
* She goes into great detail about how a jacket/blazer should fit. Most stylists tell the audience to pick the jacket that you can button and take it to a tailor, but they don't explain what needs to be done. Ms. Paige explains step-by-step (including an illustration) of how a jacket is supposed to fit.
* She talks about vanity sizing and sizing of clothes in off-price retailers. While a few people know about vanity sizing, which is occuring mainly in American fashion, not everyone knows the secrets of sizing in off-price retailers. She teaches you a great technique to work around the inconsistent sizing. This technique also works for shopping at thrift stores that don't have fitting rooms.
* She teaches you some of the tricks that you can use to distinguishing "cheap" garments from "bargain" garments.
* She also goes into detail about how other clothing items should fit.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to look stylish without having to spend a small fortune.
Style on a Shoestring : Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a Fortune
As a busy working mother, I felt tired of my usual black and brown clothes and wanted some style advice to choose more wisely the clothes that I wore and purchase in the future.
I did not realise I would read Ms Paige's book twice in 48 hours, try everything on in my wardrobe and after following the guidelines realise that only 5 items were doing me any favors!!
This book teaches you how to put outfits together, and think when you purchase. How to be thifty yet still retain classic wearable clothes that remain fashionable.
I never expected to feel so good about myself when I dress now each day and for the first time in ages really enjoyed going shopping for my clothes... sort of like a treasure hunt. For example: I used Andy's advice when buying pants, checking the leg cut, front and back for signs and surprised myself by the great fit in the changeroom.
I really enjoyed this book and feeling excited about my clothes, and good about myself was a bonus that I didn't expect. Andy's advice is like an honest best friend there to guide you yet allowing your own style to show. This is a gem of a book and I am so thankful that I purchased it.
It was just OK. Nothing extraudinary and nothing new. I'd recommend The Pocket Stylist instead. There is info some might useful but to most it should be common sense. For example on how to pick the right fit. Does one really needs a guide to be able to tell if an item fits well or whether you can see undergarments' lines on your clothing or not?
I also found that most recommendations on the styles did not take into account specific body types. I could be wrong, but I got an impression the author was using a particular body type as a model for this book.
The book starts out talking about undergarments and wearing correct undergarment for each outfit, how undergarments should fit etc. Then it talks about how other clothing items should fit and what to look for to get the right fit. Also there is a lot of info on thrift stores and when to shop for what to catch good sales, some on organizing your closet, picking the colors and what each color means. there is also a section on what not to wear.
What I found useful was some info on the pockets, pocket alignment and shape. Information on thrift store was also somewhat useful, as well as the section on what not to do. Overall the book isn't bad at all, just not as informative as one would expect from all the positive reviews.
Andy Paige's Cents of Style company has been such a great help in my life I am so excited about her amazing book!
Style of a Shoestring is super informative, and approachable in understanding how to create your own personal style without looking like a slave to trends or blowing all of your money. I never knew all the amazing things in this book. There is an approach to planning a wardrobe and making it all come together and instead of vague statements like, "everyone should own a white shirt" Andy tells you how that shirt should fit, and what it should be like to get a good quality white shirt.
For real, informative, and useful advice on style this book is the best!
After having read a good number of publications of this genre, I've FINALLY found one that I'd rate a 5 star. Incredble amounts of incredibly useful information: how clothing is cut and why it does/doesn't flatter a figure, what not to ever waste your money on, where buttons need to be placed to insure a "no gap" blouse, and on and on for the entire book, all written in a conversational tone with a good dose of humor. I'm stopping back to pick up a copy for my sister and my niece; you won't go wrong with this one. Thank you so much, Andy!
