Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year

Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year-OldI just finished reading "Homeschooling the Teen Years." I've highlighted over half of the book, and now I'm reading through it for the second time. I'm checking out all of the web links listed etc. Thank you so very much for writing this terrific book. I am new to the homeschooling scene and would have been quite lost without it. You have pointed me in the right direction.

Two weeks ago I pulled my 12 year old, seventh grade student from public school on basically what was a spur of the moment, desperation move. Long story short, he has been on Ritalin for 4 years, has never enjoyed even one day of school (including kindergarten), had a 504 plan for passive A.D.D and writing/processing problems. I was tired of trying to get the teachers to cooperate, my son to do his homework after school, tears, low self-esteem and failing grades. I just knew there had to be a better way to help my son receive the education he deserves.

In just two short weeks, my son's behavior and personality are undergoing major changes. He is happier, less stressed, and for the first time -willing to sit down and learn without the fear of failure. The greatest part of all is that he's no longer taking the Ritalin. I threw that away the day I pulled him from public school. Guess what? He's fine without it. I feel in my heart that this was the best decision I have ever made for my son.

I was scared, doubting myself and wondering why in the world did I think I could do this. Now I know I can do this, and do it better then the schools. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you most. Your book has become my inspiration and will continue to guide me through the high school years.

Thank you, Cafie Cohen, from the bottom of my heart!

I have been homeschooling for 11 years now and I must say this has been one of the most useful publications I have come across. I have already struggled through two teens with little help and not knowing where to turn for resources. There is a great deal of information for the younger years, but very little for teens. This book not only give you insightful information to make your teens education well rounded and interesting, but it also provides a wealth resources to turn for further information. No homeschool should be without it.

This is a great book for anyone homeschooling teenagers. In a wonderful, easy-to-read format, it discusses concerns of every family member -mom and dad and teens and younger children. The author answers questions that new homeschoolers have, such as "How do we get legal?" and "Where do we find curriculum?" and "What about a diploma?" In addition the book contains a wealth of information for experienced home educators. Drawing not only on the author's years homeschooling her own children, but also on the experience of dozens of homeschooling families worldwide, this title contains an incredible number of fun, creative, practical, and money-saving suggestions for all subjects -writing, foreign languages, advanced math, history, science, and so on. Based on a survey results compiled by the author, you will find lists throughout of homeschoolers' favorites -from software to historical videos to authors teens love. One chapter discusses part-time homeschooling and afterschooling, that is, using homeschooling resources and approaches with schooled children. This is perfect for those families who want to use tried-and-true homeschooling resources to improve their child's math abilities or to enrich their teen's school history curriculum. Afterschooling offers ways to try homeschooling without jumping in full-time. Above all, the book emphasizes that there is no one right way to succeed. Instead it details many paths to success -traditional approaches, unit studies, interest-initiated learning, and eclectic approaches -and invites you to select those options that best fit your family.

This is Just what I have been needing. Especially the chapters on "The Joy of Learning with Teens" and "Learning Assets of the Teen Years". I've needed this wake-up call to focus on the positives of the teen years instead of the negatives.

This is the best homeschool book I've read in years! Cafi manages to give a broad picture, explaning the many different routes homeschoolers take, while giving you baby steps of how to get moving in positive directions, find great curriculum, and money saving tips. She addresses the specifics of the 3R's and the Extras, addresses tailoring your school to your family's needs, keeping records and much more. I loved the fact that she writes with a national perspective. These are not just her ideas, but come from a large pool of home educators across the continent. The book is packed with resources, not an indiscriminating barage, but only the best.

I got my copy of Homeschooling, The Teen Years and read it through immediately. It was such an encouragement. Although we have been homeschooling for more than five years, sometimes I get cold feet and fear that we are not doing enough. Cafi's book points out the many ways we educate our kids every day and gives suggestions for new things to try. I highly recommend this book to people who are considering homeschooling their teens, and especially to those who are already doing it!

Complications: A Doctor's Love Story

Complications: A Doctor's Love StoryThis is the beautiful and true life love story of mid life soul mates finding each other at last, only to have their love challenged by insurmountable odds that even the most wide eyed optimist would find daunting. But Linda Gromko is not some wide eyed altruistic optimist. She's the real deal.

Two successful, productive, middle age longtime single parents fall in love and begin weaving their lives together. Outgoing and fun-loving, Steve Williams is a business executive with a 9 year old daughter and a large network of family and friends from the audio electronics and fitness equipment industries. More introverted and compassionate, former nurse Dr. Linda Gromko has a 27 year old adult son, an 85 year old mother, and a close-knit staff in her small urban family medicine practice, through which she has become engaged in GLBT issues. Even before they marry Steve suffers major medical problems, acute and chronic kidney failure. Over a six-year series of life-threatening health crises, he loses many things that had been most important to him: his career; active engagement in the daily life of his daughter and her friends; a beautiful Bainbridge Island home custom designed and frequently used for entertaining; good food, travel and other joys of a robust, affluent and interesting life. Linda is thrown into her special hell: having to divert attention from her intimate neighborhood medical practice to confront top levels of high-tech specialized medicine in two of the largest, most prestigious but most bureaucratic institutions in the region, not as an esteemed colleague but as advocate for her vulnerable husband. Dr. Gromko does not try to hide the fact that, exhausted by all this, neither is always at his or her cheerful, cooperative, optimistic best. But their love grows. His family and friends provide amazing comfort and support. He becomes interested in her issues and her writing. Her son eventually becomes a primary caregiver for his dying stepfather and a friend for his teenage stepsister. Although several of Linda's staff members encounter their own serious medical problems, they pull together to keep her clinic serving patients with little help from their employer, the only doctor. Linda taps into deep reserves of courage and stamina not only to care for Steve but also to take on a new cause--trying to help specialized medical providers become more compassionate and effective. Her two books on their ordeal, "Complications: a Doctor's Love Story," and "Let Me Go When the Banter Stops: A Doctor's Fight for the Love of Her Life," and her other writings, blogs and public speeches are part of that effort.

In our society many of the smartest, hardest working, most highly trained and motivated people focus on narrow specialties, providing technical wizardry but too often lacking in human compassion and social skills needed to work effectively with others, including colleagues and the very people they are trying to help. This is not unique to medicine; it also happens in law, business, politics, even nonprofit organizations. Through her heartbreaking but inspiring true love story, Dr. Gromko has diagnosed and provides perceptive insights into social problems far bigger than the medical profession.

I found Linda Gromko's Love Story to be very well written, and very touching as well. Steve Williams is an aquaintence of mine from my college years and although I knew of his current condition, I had no idea of the trials and tribulations that one on dialysis must endure. Linda and Steve's daughter (Brita) are saints for loving, caring, and helping Steve through this journey. Having a few medical issues of my own, I found this a "feel good read". It is a tribute to love and friendship between a man and his wife and family. I look forward to the rumored sequil.

I read this book because I'm working on computer software related to ESRD. I was looking for a book that would help me understand what the ESRD patients were living through, what their concerns were, what their lives were like.

Well, this book provided all that and more. It is an incredibly honest love story, well written, reads like a novel. Congratulations to Dr. Gromko for making the experience of ESRD understandable for those of us who have not had to deal with it.

I wish her and her family the best of luck but i think they have found their own luck and love.

Dr. Gromko's wonderfully crafted book is a portrait of genuine love between her and her husband Steve, as they battle through life together against his end-stage kidney disease. Their love is genuine--not "LOVE" to get the wedding, or "LOVE" to get the babies, but love in its purest and richest of meanings, with sacrifice, compromise, laughter, mutual devotion and neverending hope. Her book is a treasure.

129 Natural Remedies For Weight Loss: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 2

129 Natural Remedies For Weight Loss: Home Remedies Wisdom, Volume 2For the price, this is a great little book. The author admittedly doesn't have a scientific background, but it looks like she has read a number books on weight loss and she has struggled with obesity herself. As such, this book is a barrage of tips and ideas on weight lost that have worked for her throughout the years. I was familiar with most of the tips outlined. However, I like her common sense approach to weight loss. In particular, she maintains that there isn't one perfect approach to weight loss for everyone. Therefore, I like the idea that she gives the reader a number of choices to assist in the process. Granted, some of her ideas are not based on science, but who's to say they won't work for someone. For example, one of her tips is to take 5 HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, which has never really been shown to assist with weight loss in the literature. However, it has been shown to help with depression and maybe, just maybe, it might help someone lose weight. In spite of the lack of science-based information, I found the book refreshing. All in all, she has a number of ideas that you can pick and choose from in your effort to lose weight. She does need a good editor as the book is filled with a number of typos.

129 Natural Remedies for Weight Loss: Vol 2 was a pleasant and inspirational read. Ms. Johnston's volume is chalk full of useful thinking, eating, and exercise tips--all of them natural and potentially healthy.

The book is well-written, thoughtful, and pleasing to the eye. The book is concise, yet reveals tons of great supplements and is filled with helpful insights. Phrases like "create habits that [you] will love and want to do that will help keep [you] thin!" and "your body is a marvel and will respond to praise, encouragement and attention" help replace old thinking patterns with positive, potent thinking that will help you succeed at your weight release adventure.

I highly recommend this book for weight loss tips and a good read.

P.S. The review above comes from our health-conscious writing team.

I'll add that my own personal favorite tip was #103 bench press your kids. I didn't want to give too much away but could not resist as this tip brought back many pleasant memories. I wrestled with my four children and bench pressed them from time to time. Also, we have a few pictures of one of my sons (who did not need to lose an ounce) bench pressing his college roommate!

This is an amazing book. I learned so much about what has been keeping me from losing weight, and more importantly, how to begin to lose it.

As I age it becomes increasingly more difficult to lose weight, and increasingly easier to gain weight!

What I really like about this book is that so many of the methods described just resonated with me -which means I can do them, and stick to them! This could be the last book on weight loss that I'll ever need!

This book is actually a revelation because it contains so many tips to get you into the right mindset for losing weight. Sydney Johnson exposes many myths about eating, dieting and weight loss and then goes on to suggest positive ways that you can create a new body for yourself. The book does not expound any particular eating plan and, rather than telling you what not to eat, it tells you what you can eat to maintain a healthy body.

Sydney's book is also good for self-motivation: most dieters fail because they vaguely promise themselves that they will lose weight but without the necessary determination their resolve fails.

This book is a goldmine of facts and tips and inspiration. A must-have for intelligent dieters!

Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship

Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship"I wanted the warmth of spontaneous connection and the freedom to be left alone." ~ Gail Caldwell

From the start of this profoundly beautiful story we know that Gail Caldwell loses her best friend Caroline Knapp. As she puts it so precisely, you can't "sidestep the cruelty of an intolerable loss." For about a third of this book the words were blurry because it is so moving. Just when I thought I had composed myself enough to read on, I cried again. Sometimes I'd read a sentence and reread it again and again because it was so true.

This is the story of two soul mates who love dogs, swimming and sculling. In some way it doesn't matter what they were doing, they just loved being together. After an outing they would find themselves both at home calling each other on the phone. Their friendship is deep, meaningful and essential!

There are some surprising details like how they both dated the same man. What are the chances of that happening? Then there is the fact that they both loved drinking at one point in their lives and overcame their addiction before meeting. Gail Caldwell talks briefly about her own drinking problem but mostly focuses on the friendship.

"Let's Take the Long Way Home" is a book that will work its way into your heart in ways few books ever will. I loved the warmth of Gail Caldwell's writing style and how she expresses such honest feelings in lucid prose. This is one of the best books I've read this year!

~The Rebecca Review

Gail Caldwell's memoir is a touching account of friendship that is brief but all encompassing. Although she and Caroline Knapp are only friends for seven years before Caroline is felled by lung cancer, the two built a relationship that is deeper than what's enjoyed by many blood relatives.

Their lives contained many similarities. Both women are childless, single writers and former alcoholics who initially bond over their dogs, but their relationship deepens to the point where Gail says it was easy to mistake them for sisters or lovers.

Both women are loners which makes it seem kind of unlikely that they would form this lasting friendship, but their relationship works because they respect each other's boundaries and both believed in confronting problems head-on instead of stewing in silence.

Gail's account of her years as a functional alcoholic are stark and poignant. In one particularly bad moment, she passes out in a drunken stupor and breaks four ribs. This doesn't stop her from drinking and she fashions a portable bar by attaching a bag of ice and a flask of liquor to her crutches. It takes her a long time to accept that she was in fact an alcoholic and needed help to stop drinking. And unlike Caroline who'd written a book about her drinking problem, Gail never really liked to discuss this part of her life and they had been friends for a while before she ever broached the subject.

But despite all their other similarities, it is their devotion to their dogs that dominates most of the story. These women love their animals and spent lots of time and money training and caring for them. Gail reckons that it's sort of a maternal bond that you have with someone who is completely dependent on you for your survival, but the incongruity is that Gail, who is reclusive after she gives up drinking, was afraid of anyone needing her that much or of her needing anyone else that much. She was even reluctant to call Caroline after she was involved in an accident that landed her in the hospital.

Gail's friendship with Caroline was a gift that allowed her to grow and become a more open person, and her loss also taught Gail some hard lessons about grief and sorrow. This book is truly a remarkable tale about the intersection of the lives of two kindred spirits.

Buy Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship Now

This beautiful memoir of friendship could only come from someone who has experienced an intimate emotional connection of the highest level with another human being. Gail Caldwell had that connection with fellow writer Caroline Knapp, then lost it when Knapp died shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

I was consumed by Knapp's own memoir, Drinking: A Love Story many years ago. I remember reading of Knapp's death not long after that and feeling so pained by the fact that she had survived alcoholism only to be robbed of her life just a few years later. Caldwell's book was like finding a missing piece for me, an intimate look into the lives of Knapp and Caldwell and the tremendous friendship they wove together through walks in the woods, long summer vacations together and countless hours on the phone. A friendship that close changes lives forever, but neither was prepared for what lie ahead.

It seemed perverse almost, that fate would tear these two souls apart and Caldwell chronicles her private suffering with unrelenting candor and despair. Not only could I see the hole in her heart, her brilliant storytelling allowed me to feel it to some degree. That's the mark of excellence in a good memoir. Let's Take the Long Way Home doesn't just tell a story. It takes us along for a walk in the woods and like Caldwell, at journey's end, we're never the same.

Highly recommended, esp. after reading Knapp's memoir.

If you have tears, prepare to shed them.

Caroline Knapp was the author of Drinking: A Love Story. I've wriiten about it on because some of you surely have issues with alcohol, and I thought it might be of use. And because it's acutely observed and beautifully written. And because there's a painful irony here: Caroline got sober, only to die in June of 2002, when she was forty-two, seven weeks after she was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.

Caroline Knapp had a best friend. Gail Caldwell. Also a writer. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2001. She too had alcohol issues.

Two women writers. Both dog lovers. Both recovering alcoholics. Both living alone, and liking it. Both athletes. Near-neighbors in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Friends. Best friends. One died. The other wrote a book: "Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship." [To buy the book from Amazon, click here. For the Kindle edition, click here.]

There are men and women I love, and I think they know it, and I hope they know how incredibly lucky I feel that I'm in their lives, but we're talking about something else here, something deeper and more precious and, certainly, scarier.

"It's an old story," Caldwell begins. "I had a friend and we shared everything, and then she died and so we shared that.''

Define everything. Well, rowing on the Charles River. Writing. Alcoholism. And, most of all, afternoon-long walk with their dogs:

"'Let's take the long way home,' she would say once we had gotten to the car, and then we would wend our way through the day traffic of Somerville or Medford, in no hurry to separate. At the end of the drive, with Clementine [Caldwell's dog] snoring softly in the back seat, we would sit outside the house of whoever was being dropped off, and keep talking. Then we would go inside our respective houses and call each other on the phone."

This is a grief memoir, but that descent into deepest sadness is also, by definition, an exploration of peak experiences. Everything's heightened, brighter, sharper in lives lived this acutely. This is a 190-page book --we don't get to Caroline's illness until page 125. What comes before? This great friendship, detailed. But also a condensed biography of Caroline Knapp. And a lacerating autobiography of Gail Caldwell:

"I've always remembered one thing Rich [Caldwell's AA adviser] said one day, when I was buried in fear and shame at the idea that I had drunk my way into alcoholism. He asked me why I was so frightened, and I told him, weeping, the first thing that came into my mind: "I'm afraid that no one will ever love me again." He leaned toward me with a smile of great kindness on his face, his hands clasped in front of him. "Don't you know?" he asked gently. "The flaw is the thing we love."

Eventually --you dread it --Caldwell gets to Caroline's fatal illness. The disbelief. The stoicism. And then, as Caroline begins her final descent, the combination of love and pride and hurt --the recognition moment of what there was and what will be lost.

"Near the end, I asked him [Caroline's former therapist] what he thought was happening, and he said, "Tell her everything you haven't said," and I smiled with relief. "There's nothing," I said. "I've already told her everything."

Can you imagine that? I can't.

I've always had a weakness for damaged women --they're so much more beautiful than the perfect ones. From her own book, I found Caroline Knapp to be ravishing. Now, here, I add Gail Caldwell.

What an astonishing friendship. What great women. What a stellar, unforgettable book.

Want Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship Discount?

Let's Take The Long Way Home is, at its core, a love story. It's a story of how a close connection with a friend can ground us and provide us with a life worth living. And it's a story that any woman who has ever had a friend who is like a sister I count myself among those fortunate women will understand in a heartbeat.

Gail Caldwell, the Pulitzer Prize winning author, met Caroline Knapp, also a writer, over their mutual love of their dogs. Ms. Caldwell writes, "Finding Caroline was like placing a personal ad for an imaginary friend, then having her show up at your door funnier and better than you had conceived."

Both women about a decade apart in age are passionate about writing and their dogs and have successfully dealt with alcohol addiction that knocked them to their knees. "We had a lot of dreams, some of them silly, all part of the private code shared by people who plan to be around for the luxuries of time," Ms. Caldwell shares.

Quickly, Gail and Caroline and their two dogs become a "pack of four". They are both self-described moody introverts who prefer the company of dogs. Yet, "...we gave each other wide berth it was far easier, we learned over the years, to be kind to the other than to ourselves." As they grow closer, Gail and Caroline learn that nurturance and strength "were each the lesser without the other."

It is almost inconceivable that this close friendship would ever end, but Caroline is a smoker and at 42, she learns she has stage 4 lung cancer. Her death comes quickly, in a matter of weeks. Gail Caldwell reflects, "Death is a divorce nobody asked for; to live through it is to find a way to disengage from what you thought you couldn't stand to lose." And later: "Caroline's death had left me with a great and terrible gift: how to live in a world where loss, some of it unbearable, is as common as dust or moonlight." Eventually, she comes to realize "...we never get over great losses; we absorb them, and they carve us into different, often kinder, creatures."

This memoir is poignant, authentic, unflinching, and genuine never manipulative or sudsy. In addition to the profound look at an extraordinary friendship, it also focuses on "inter-species" love between two fiercely self-reliant woman and their dogs. The rich and moving portrayal of Gail Caldwell's Samoy, Clementine, will be entirely familiar to those of us who have shared our lives with four-legged "fur babies"; love in any guise is still love.

This eloquent book ends up being a celebration of life in all its complexities including love, friendship, devotion, and grief. As Gail Caldwell writes, "The real trick is to let life, with all its ordinary missteps and regrets, be consistently more mysterious and alluring than its end."

Easy Hikes Close to Home: Phoenix

Easy Hikes Close to Home: PhoenixNote to readers: This is an excerpted review from a large print edition of the same book. I like the contents, but in large print edition, I commented more on the readability. This review is entirely about the content of this title.

Like many Menasha Ridge authors, Charles Liu has written an extensive hiking guide to the Phoenix region, and then excerpted some of the shorter hikes for a contribution to Menasha Ridge's "Easy Hikes Close to Home" series. Happily, this book does include some original material and anyone who enjoys southwest hiking will find some benefit from this title.

The book describes 20 different routes in the greater Phoenix area, all of which are within an hour's drive and none of which are longer than 6 miles. Still, readers who think they are getting all strolls in the park should be aware that no hike in the Phoenix area, especially in the summer, is truly easy. Be sure to carry plenty of water. Besides that, Liu has a passion for peaks, and this book includes several routes up the Phoenix mountains that are steep and moderately challenging. A few of these paths are not heavily frequented, but route descriptions are accurate, and this book includes a decent set of sketch maps.

As a (fairly regular) visitor to Phoenix, I prefer the short trail format. I get to see a lot of the region quickly in a morning or evening hike without having to acclimatize to the heat that dominates the area from April through October. I also appreciate the diversity of terrain in the book, including a waterfall! (Really.) So if you find yourself in Phoenix for a few days, this is a nice book to pick up. It will give you a variety of options for exploring a part of the city visitors rarely see. Even residents will benefit from this title, though Liu's longer book, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles, Phoenix, may be a better choice for those who live in the Valley of the Sun.

Smart Lotionmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Luxurious Lotions, or How to Make Lotion That's Bette

Smart Lotionmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Luxurious Lotions, or How to Make Lotion That's Better Than You Buy and Costs You LessThis is it! The Best Ever How To Lotion making book you will ever want and need! No more lumpy, heavy, oily "pretend" lotions from other books these recipes all work and are REAL lotions. Once again, Anne has prepared clear, concise, easy to follow instructions that are truly step by step for anyone to understand. There are no hidden mysteries, no contradictions, nothing confusing. I have made a few lotions from this book already, following Anne's instructions, and all my friends are begging for more! Anne also includes very important and essential information on keeping everything clean and sanitized to prevent any likelihood of contamination, a factor that many other sources 'skip' and put in the too-hard basket. She also includes lots of very helpful tips and has a 'frequently asked questions' section at the back. And even best of all, you can actually contact the author if you have any other questions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Although I was one of the testers for this book, I had no intention of actually making lotion because I "knew" it was too difficult for me. Why make lotion when I could buy a base, add a litle fragrance and call it my own? Well, I flinched everytime a customer would ask if I had made the lotion that was being offered. Now I can say yes and accept the praises for the lotion I actually make. This book made me want to make lotion!!

As she has done with all of her How To books, Anne writes as if you are sitting across the kitchen table from her as she takes you through each aspect of lotion making. She has the innate ability to anticipate every question that might come up and the instructions and recipes are always very easy to follow. This is a must have book for all soap and lotion crafters.

To get to know Anne better, go to her home page at and see what else she has to offer. Her fiction is memorable. She is the consummate story teller. An all around talented writer.

In Anne Watson's casual, easy to read, easy to understand, friendly sit-down chat at the kitchen table style, she has made lotion making accessible to everyone, not just soap makers. Whether making lotions just for yourself or to sell, this book is a must have. In this tough economy where self-sufficiency is becoming more and more important, Anne teaches you to make quality lotions that work best for you (better than store-bought and without the unnecessary and unwanted chemicals) and save you money at the same time. I highly recommend this book for beginners and experienced lotion makers alike. All of Anne's how-to books (both for soap AND lotion) will pay for themselves over and over and are worth every penny and a whole lot more!

I have been making my own soaps and creams for years now but always like to see what's new. While the recipes in here are very good, there is nothing new if you are experienced at making creams and lotions. If you have never made lotion before, this would be THE book to get. My favorite one is out of print and I have not seen it sold anywhere.

This book is strictly for making body lotions. No creams or facial products. If you have ever gone to any lotion crafting websites then you will be familiar with all of the ingredients in here. If this is your first time making lotion, Anne describes everything that you will need and why.

That said, you will need a gram scale since they are more accurate and, while the ounces are also given in each recipe, using grams is actually easier. You'll also need to find some e-wax since all but one of the recipes use it. No substitutions are given. I like to use xanthan gum but it tends to make a sticky product. It also happens to be easier to find locally.

Other ingredients that you may need that recipes use are stearic acid, vitamin E, preservative, and conditioning emulsifier, which is also called BTMS. And then there are oils and butters, which should be easy to find. There are a couple of recipes that call for goat's milk and one that uses almond milk. Of course, you could substitute milk for the water in any of the recipes. I made a goat's milk lotion one time and it was incredibly thick. Be aware that adding milk will do that.

Getting lotion into bottles presents its own challenge, which Anne is up for. Follow her directions and you will be bottling lotion like a pro. I use wide-mouthed small jars but I don't sell my lotions and creams. Everybody in the house gets their own jar.

If you want to make your own recipes, Anne covers that in detail. She also tells you what to do if you want to start your own lotion-making business. And there is a trouble-shooting section. Finally, there is a list of suppliers in the back, which includes suppliers in several other countries besides the US. These are the most popular ones.

If you want to make all-purpose body lotions, get this book. You truly will be making anything better than what you will find in a store.

Anne Watson has done it again. Her books are always simple and clear. She has a way of giving all the information that is needed to make a quality product, whether it is soap or lotion yet never making the instructions intimidating. After reading this book, I was easily able to walk into the kitchen and make a quality lotion that I had control of the ingredients.

I have tried several of the recipes in the book and they have all been fantastic. They worked and gave me a nice creamy lotion that when applied was absorbed into the skin in minutes and lasted all day. There is a section in the book on formulating your own recipes and I have done that also. Anne makes herself available by email to answer any questions that might come up along the way. Now where do you get that kind of help?

If you want to have control of the ingredients in the lotion you use and and make a yummy lotion, then this is the book for you.

Pocket Yoga: 52 Basic Asanas for Practice at Home or on the Road

Pocket Yoga: 52 Basic Asanas for Practice at Home or on the RoadThis is a great yoga guidebook. I take it with me on business trips, and use it to come up with my own yoga routines in the hotel. It's been a great help to me, and has really got me into the habit of practicing yoga every day. Highly recommended.

This little book delivers all that it promises and much more. The droll commentary and Vera's charming personality make learning (or remembering) yoga postures (asanas) and their sometimes difficult names really fun. Vera is empathic, humble and humorous. Intended as a supplement to yoga classes, Pocket Yoga gently coaxes, encourages and amuses practicioners of all levels. Small enough to tuck in your gym bag, large enough to make a great gift to fellow yoginis, this unique book is a gem.

This book has made Yoga so much easier for me in my busy life. I can take it anywhere (and we all know how our exercise suffers when we travel). The visuals and explanations about the poses make it easy to learn and remember. As if that is not enough, the book is educational as it teaches all the terms and pronunciations to make you sound like an expert. And last but not least, she'll have you laughing along the way!! It's simply genius.

I love this little book! Vera Sana is smart, funny, and very knowledgeable about the asanas. Let her be your guide through the various poses, explaining everything as she goes. Before long you will learn to pronounce the Sanskrit names and understand the connections between the asanas. Her suggestions for getting into and out of each pose are based on her years of yoga practice, which she does imperfectly every day. Her thoughts about each pose will bring a new dimension to your own yoga practice.

This book is the perfect size to take with you everywhere you go. Use it for inspiration, motivation, or reference. Vera will soon become a trusted friend. She does her best, and as she says, that is all anyone can ask.

Natural Beauty: Pamper Yourself with Salon Secrets at Home

Natural Beauty: Pamper Yourself with Salon Secrets at HomeThis book could be good for a model wanna-be. It does have a chapter on shaping your eyebrows and waxing your legs ouch! However, if you want useful recipes and remedies do not buy this book! The author's idea of a recipe for Foot-Soaking Fizzies is Alka Seltzer and your favorite essential oil. Her recipe for Aromatherapy Bath Salts is epsom salt, your favorite essential oil and food coloring! This book lacks useful information and only has a few recipes other than those listed on the back cover. Most ingredients are not natural and most of her "secrets" would irritate my sensitive skin.

The author, a model turned aesthetician, shares her knowledge about natural body care. She tells how to care for your skin, eyes, and hair and gives recipes for creams, shampoos, conditioners, etc. that have natural and few ingredients, are easy to make at home, and are inexpensive. She also includes a wonderful section about buying cosmetics in stores, how salespeople trick you into buying more than you want and need, and how you can avoid those pitfalls.

Unlike other books that are loaded with recipes and leave you undecided what's best for you, du Priest suggests one or two for each skin and hair type and tells you why they will work for you. For people who may not believe that such simple and inexpensive lotions will work, she points out that her sugar-oil scrub for aging skin, which you can make at home in 1 minute from ingredients in your kitchen, has the same composition as a $15 beautifully packaged mini-tube sold in beauty stores.

Other beauty books require you to buy dozens of basic ingredients before you can start your home cosmetics, duPriest's doesn't. Her ingredients can easily be found in supermarkets.

I liked the author's straightforward way and throughout the book I always felt she was honest

I just rec'd this book and it's outstanding!! Very straightforward tips with easy "recipes" for beauty. I'm putting it in my 12 year old daughter's stocking...shhh... I want her to begin her journey for natural beauty without the needs for mega expenditures in cosmetics. DuPriest's book will surely get her on the path to taking care of her skin and hair without a lot of expense. Highly recommend. Look forward to her next book!

I borrowed this from my library to see if it was something worth reading. The things she talks about in here is very basic, real and down to Earth. I love that I can go into my kitchen and make just about anything "spa" with the ingredients in there! I don't have to go to the health food store and buy things I wouldn't normally use like glycerin.

She also talks about -waxing-how to do it at home and make your own wax; -clothing, what works and doesn't

-shopping for things, especially cosmetics

-different tricks played on you by salons

-how a positive attitude makes you shine on the outside

-is expensive make-up better than cheap?

-how to properly shape lips and eyebrows

-hair care

-how to massage

-etc.

A basic cleanser for your face (all skin types): 1t yogurt, 1/2t honey. Mix and massage onto face. Rinse with warm water.

I liked the book so much that I decided to buy my own book so I can highlight in it the different things I want to use.

The Cosmetics Cookbook: Over 50 recipes to beautify your face, hair, and entire body you can whip up

The Cosmetics Cookbook: Over 50 recipes to beautify your face, hair, and entire body you can whip up at home for practically pennies!I have been making cosmetics for over 10 years, have a diploma in herbal medicine & aromatherapy...thought this book would be a great addition to my cosmetic cookbook collection. It was not. If you are a beginner & when I say beginner, I mean you have never made anything cosmetic in your kitchen before, this may be a good book for you. If you have made cosmetics in the past and don't know much about formulation, then check this book out from the library before purchasing. The recipes call for ingredients like mineral oil and petroleum jelly (NASTY ingredients to use on your face & body--these are both by-products of the petroleum industry, are not good for you, create a greasy layer on top of the skin, do not penetrate &/or heal anything), clearly the author does not realize what she is instructing people to use on their bodies. I generally do not leave bad reviews of any book, I try to find a little nugget of valuable information in the book prior to writing a review, but I have not been able to find a thing that justifies a good or at least ambivalent review of this book.

Excellent! The only word to describe it. The book is very well presented and also well written. A MUST for every home with such simple and easy to prepare recipies. I would recommend this book to everyone and really worth its price in gold!

This book is very simple and easy to read. The instructions and recipe items are basically all from your kitchen. My only problem is that some of the recipes are almost too simple; almost like they were just taken from the sky and they seem to be all from "granny". I haven't tried any of them but I can see how some of them would work considering what I already know.
