The Resistance Band Workout Book

The Resistance Band Workout BookI didn't buy this through Amazon. But I thought it was a great book. Many more uses for the band than most books. It discusses stretching, rest periods for the muscles, etc. It is divided into groups of exercises for each of the major muscle groups. Off-hand, I can recall it has exercises for arms, shoulders, chest, trunk and abs, legs, hips, thighs and buttocks. That's great for targetting. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the workouts in the back don't refer to the page the exercise is on so I constantly have to go back to look for them and then do them. I still haven't found one of them yet, lol. But all in all, it did have more excersises for the bands for each muscle group than any of the other books I have so far.

I would've given this 3 1/2 stars although that is not an option (so i rounded up). First let me state that I think this is a great book. The writers provide excellent information and pictures so that a user can do the exercises with ease. They also provide good information to help the user to try to create a program that will help them fulfill their needs.

There were a couple of things that I think the author could've improved upon. First, as another reviewer mentioned, they do not tell you the page numbers of the exercises in the end of the book (program section). When creating your program, it takes 3x as long to look up each individual exercise. Second, I did not like that they did not include what muscle (s) or groups were being worked out in each exercise. Granted the writers put the exercises under vague headings like Chest, arm, legs, etc. but they do not tell you specifics like biceps, traps, rear delts... like every other exercise book does. Lastly, I think the writers should have had several sample exercise plans that each cater to one's specific goals.

If they revise this book and incorporate some of these suggestions, then this book would definitely be 5 stars.

It's a cool book. I has a great description and it's easy to follow. I especially like how they broke down the planes (i.e. horizontal, sagital, and frontal) altough this may not seem important to novice exercisers. It definately gives you exercises for the total body.

101 Workouts for Women: Everything You Need to Get a Lean, Strong and Fit Physique

101 Workouts for Women: Everything You Need to Get a Lean, Strong and Fit Physiquei teach fitness classes at a major national chain. this book is excellent. great ideas, wonderful pictures and tips. no diets (which i don't always like to have mixed with my fitness/exercise books). it's pure exercise moves using barbells, dumbbells, bands, stability balls and machines with good variety on each. if you workout at home only without a gym this probably won't work for you but if you're a gym person this is a great book. i should mention that i really like the diversity of fitness models. that's something you don't always see in fitness books but i really appreciate it. this book is like having a personal trainer! i'm going to use it to select some exercises before i go to the gym then when i get there i'll just do the routine i planned for myself. again, i have lots of exercise experience but i still find this book to be a fresh edititon to my fitness book collection. if you like muscle & fitness hers magazine you'll really like all the workouts in one easy to ready, and pretty, book. good job!!!!

I just picked this book up at B&N yesterday and for some of the very reasons previously listed by the other two posters. I love all of the great ideas it has to offer and the diversity of the women in the book. I also love the fact that all the pictures depicting the poses are in COLOR. It even provides exercise routines which includes the number of sets and repetitions along with tips on what or what not to do. For those of you who don't have a gym membership don't fret it offers plenty of exercises you can do at home utilizing dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, your furniture, a step apparatus, a workout bench, and an exercise ball.

So there's something for everyone at any level. I don't think I've ever been this excited about exercising since there are 101 fully color illustrated exercises to choose from.

I wish that I had ordered it from Amazon because I could have saved money but I'm still happy I got the book.

I've been using this book for the last 11 weeks and I am so happy with it . I've always been into fitness and have been a runner for many years, but despite my hard work I have never acheived the overall toned look I wanted simply because I lacked the know how. Well, I just had my 3rd baby 3 1/2 months ago and let me tell you, I am so pleased with the results. Granted I still have a ways to go, but I feel strong and look pretty good. If you combine this book with cardio as it suggests, I just don't see how you can go wrong. What a great book!

I agree somewhat with the previous reviews except YOU DON'T NEED TO JOIN A GYM! Did you know that if you have exercise bands the kind with handles you can duplicate almost if not all the exercises done on gym equipment. I am fortunate to have a Precor 3-2-1 and have found a new love for working out on it at home. But I also have exercise bands and like to use them as well so the book is a win, win for me. When a band feels to easy, just buy the next heavier one or make the band tighter. The other great thing about this book, is they give a sample work out week, such as, Mon: chest and triceps, Tues: Legs, Wed: off, Thurs: Back and Biceps and Friday: Shoulders and Abs. The book is not just body parts they also have 8 to 12 week plans. As you can tell I really like this book, if you have felt disappointed in other weight training books, as I have, buy this book and you will be happy you did.

He's a Stud, She's a Slut, and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know

He's a Stud, She's a Slut, and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should KnowI'm not being sarcastic at all--I'm a male reader, and I found this book to be REALLY insightful stuff. I also found double-standard #51: that these are double standards that WOMEN should know. Shouldn't men know these too? I mean, I'm trying to raise my two sons with better insights than the blueprint for sexist privilege they are being handed to them every darned DAY, and I want them to see past it. So right there in the title--BAM!--another unintended double-standard. This stuff's just as integral for men to consider.

Jessica Valenti's writing style is snappy, fun to read, and yet very good at disturbing the reader with insights that are dead-on but easily overlooked in our culture. I've followed the feministing website (which Jessica Valenti contributes to) for some time now, and I am constantly fascinated by the sheer amount of research and information that they find. I'm also disheartened by how often her work is dismissed as "thought police" or "hysteria"--but then, that's exactly what she's getting at in this book: male privilege allows (us) men to mouth off on TV, talk radio, and pretty much every other form of media about OUR interests, but women who do the same are labeled "guy bashing" or worse, simply for acting like actually free people. Books like this one are powerful documentaries about that dynamic, which is taken for granted to the point that those who call it out are usually personally scolded for it. All the more reason why Valenti's contribution is integral.

Oh, this is really interesting, to Jessica personally: you know that part where you mentioned seeing your childhood tormentor, Eleena, talking about her own issues on TV? As amazing as this is, I know EXACTLY who you are talking about. I wonder, do you see her on-screen confessional as a sign of hope, or head-smacking "Jeez, how can she not even get this?"

Despite what you may think, this book doesn't just focus on double standards where women get the short end of the stick. It also talks about the crap these double standards cause men. The only critism I can think of is that #46 "He's Childless, She's Selfish" had a title that was misleading. I thought it was going to talk about how childfree women are considered selfish because apparently having kids is the only way women can contribute to society, society doesn't think twice about childfree men. Instead it talked about how single mothers are "selfish." While I agree what she was talking about there, I thought the title was misleading and she should have touched on childfree women as well.

Buy He's a Stud, She's a Slut, and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know Now

He's a Stud, She's a Slut was worth the wait. I think Valenti did a much better job with this book than with Full Frontal Feminism and this new book is a lot more approachable for women and men of all ages. Valenti does cover a lot of the more obvious double standards but she also sheds some light on some more pervasive attacks against women and details how some thing which on the surface seemed more geared towards attacking men, also set some unattainable standards for women.

The only real problem I have with this book is the "So... What to do?" section at the end of every chapter basically boils down to "Stop _____. Seriously." I think Valenti could have put more practical solutions to these everyday problems or put in more resources that have some ideas for solutions.

Overall He's a Stud, She's a Slut is great take on sexism and I'll be passing it around to all my friends.

I honestly enjoyed this book. Having read Valenti's other publication, Full Frontal Feminism, I must say that I enjoy her easy-to-read way of writing. It's a good way to introduce new generations to feminism, with her sassy wording and fun, talkative mannerisms. Not to mention, the book really made me think. It had never occurred to me that there was a double-standard about stalking in relationships, so that was probably my favorite section.

However, some of the writing, at times, left something to be desired. I think the final part of each section, which told the reader what they can do if they were come upon such double-standards, really could have been left out. A majority of the time it was just the same answer ("uh... just be aware that the double-standard exists, I guess?") and it really seemed to dumb down the general atmosphere of the book. It really took away from the reading experience for me, and I finished the book wishing those parts hadn't made Jessica sound so much less intelligent than she really is.

Want He's a Stud, She's a Slut, and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know Discount?

If you enjoy feministing.com, and/or if you liked Jessica Valenti's last book, Full-Frontal Feminism, you'll definitely love this book. Valenti uses humor and demonstrates how ridiculous some double standards are. She connects the personal and political to illustrate how insidious, everyday stereotypes are damaging and dehumanizing. It's a difficult thing to raise consciousness about gender inequality in a way that inspires activism instead of depression. And even with Valenti's attitude and humor, readers will probably find themselves infuriated or disgusted while reading about some of the injustice described. The suggestions about how to change double standards are a little vague in some places, but there's enough there to get you started brainstorming hopefully with a group of like-minded feminist friends.

Too limited for many subjects for example hypertension: no other tips? Are these not well known already?

Don't loose anything by purchasing this book but their are many more books in this field with more information.

Maybe the price should be lower because of this.

Ayurvedic Beauty Care: Ageless Techniques to Invoke Natural Beauty

Ayurvedic Beauty Care: Ageless Techniques to Invoke Natural BeautyAn amazing, wonderful book, one of the most informative I have ever read on beauty care or ayurveda, it's packed full of information from cover to cover. Very extensive, talks about all the different aspects of health and beauty care. Lots and lots of recipes to make at home and which do work. Never again will I need to throw away good money on useless, expensive face creams that don't do the job and put me at risk for cancer. Only drawback, perhaps, is that some of the recipes have too many ingredients for modest pocketbooks. Otherwise a great buy and a great book, if you don't like creepy, strange-sounding unreliable chemicals in the products you put on your skin or in your hair, this is the book for you. It's better than just a simple make-your-own-cosmetics type of book because the recipes are tailored precisely to YOUR particular skin type.

I found this book in one of the South India's bookstores. It got my attention because of the cover an ancient drawing depicted the woman's beauty from the times long gone.

When I read a few of the pages whilst deciding to buy the book or not, I was surprised by the straightforwardness and usefulness of the information about beauty, so I bought the book. And I wasn't disappointed for doing so.

The book is a bit thick my edition has 281 pages. However it's very easy to read, you may not even notice how you will get to the very end of it.

This book may be slightly more suitable for women, but it would also suit those men who want to look after their skin, hair and health in general, in a natural way.

Ayurvedic Beauty Care book focuses a lot on the skin and hair betterment, but it also mentions quite extensively how to fully cleanse your internal body and nourish it naturally.

What dosha type are you?

The first part of the book deals with three doshas. A dosha, as the author explains, is a life-giving force. There are three doshas in total, each one having different quality. For examle, Kapha can be described as wet; Vata as wind or breath; Pitta as heat or energy.

Each person has one particular dosha dominating, but sometimes it happens that all three doshas are of completely equal amount in one person.

In this section there is a comprehensive test to assess which is your dominant dosha, and then the author gives advice about the best natural ingredients to use for various beauty regimes for each of the three doshas.

Bringing these three doshas in balance within a person, as well as other elements such as agni (transformative power responsible for digestion and similar processes), is the fundamental principle of Ayurveda, as the author herself points out.

Daily routines for enhancing beauty

After listing some initial information necessary to understand in order to grasp what Ayurveda is about, the author goes on to teach some daily routines to enhance the beauty.

In Ayurveda the perfect functioning of the body consists of good digestion and assimilation of the food together with a regular and efficient waste evacuation. If these processes work well, then the beauty and radiance comes naturally. Therefore ayurvedic cleansing processes focus a great deal on perfecting these workings of the body.

Ayurvedic Beauty Care book mentions some good advice about how to help digestion as well as how to select your food wisely. It also has a section about how to eat according to your dosha and even suggests a sample menu for a day.

How to balance your agni

The concept of agni is unique to ayurveda. The author describes agni as simply being the digestive fire. And that not only applies to the process of food digestion, but also the digestion of your thoughts, emotions, feelings and information.

Agni cleans our toxins and keeps the digestive tract clean. This brings radiance to the outer body. When agni is not balanced, it may be too active or too slow. The signs that your agni is slow are these:

* Gas

* Burping

* Slow digestion

* Tired mind

* Difficulty walking

* Scanty or no perspiration

* Constipation

* Dull complexion

The author in this section provides many effective tips about how to balance both low and too active agni.

Vitamins and minerals

In this section of the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book Melanie Sachs lists vitamins and minerals, the signs of their deficiency and in which foods particular vitamins and minerals can be found. Straight after this chapter she also discusses fasting when it's good to fast and when it's not recommended.

Beauty and work

All aspects of your life contribute to your beauty or the lack of it. And because employment is a significant part of most people's lives, it's important to choose your job wisely. Here the author suggests how to select the work that suits your inner self. She notes that for each type of person there exists work that is natural and satisfying.

Each dosha has a certain inclination towards a particular career. However it's also possible to choose work which is not your type, but then re-balance your energy by doing an additional activity which agrees with your dosha.

Massage

Everyone needs to receive massage regularly, especially the Vata-type people. Massage nourishes and relaxes the body. Different types of people (Pitta, Vata and Kapha types) need to get massages in different ways to get most benefits. Also different massage oils should be used for different dosha types. The author in this book lists the practices and the oils that should be used for each type of dosha.

Some advice on bath, meditation and sleep is also given in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book. An especially good chapter is on herbal baths; for example, an author gives a good herbal bath recipe for sound sleep.

Colors, aromas, gems and sounds

Melanie Sachs acknowledges that everything in this world is energy, and that colors, aromas, gems and sounds have certain energetic qualities that could better or harm us. Thus we can use certain qualities of these mentioned objects to increase our health and enhance our beauty.

She goes on to explain how essential oils, colors and sounds can significantly improve our bodies and minds. Melanie especially focuses on essential oils, noting how many great benefits a person could get from using them.

She lists the oils for each dosha type and she even provides an essential oil chart. I found this chart extremely useful, because it has checkmarks on the qualities of each essential oil.

For example if I look at the essential lemon oil row, I see these qualities checked:

"Oily, mature, acne, inflamed, itchy, wrinkles, congested, tired/flabby, varicose/thread veins (skin conditions), antiseptic, astringent, antibiotic, relaxing, dandruff, nail care (oil uses and qualities)."

So such chart is of great use to me. When I find out about a particular essential oil, I find it in the chart and check if it would suit my skin.

Special care of the regions of the body

In this chapter the author lists specific beauty treatments for nails, feet, hair, hands and so on. I found the hair treatment section a very useful one. The author here suggests completely natural shampoo recipes (dry and wet shampoo recipes) as well as the causes for common hair problems and their effective treatments.

Ayurvedic skin care

Skin has different qualities and experiences different problems under the influence of each dosha. Therefore each dosha type should look after their skin in a different way. However no matter which dosha you represent, the full ayurvedic facial treatment consists of eight steps:

1. Cleansing

2. Oleation massage

3. Herbal steam or compress

4. Gentle scrub

5. Cleansing or nutrifying mask or facial pack

6. Toning/rejuvenating

7. Moisturizing

8. Hydrating

Each of these steps are thoroughly described in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book, together with natural recipes for each treatment. For example, for initial cleansing, the author suggests a few herbal cleansing powder recipes for different types of skin (normal, dry, oily or blemished and mature).

Further on the author mentions a specific massage technique for the face, together with specific oils you should select according to your skin condition. She also mentions various natural scrubs, face packs, toners, moisturizers and mists to improve the quality of your skin.

As for make up, the author doesn't give much attention to it. She claims that if you follow the advice she gave in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book, your natural beauty will increase to the extent that you will use little to no make up. The most important thing is to improve your natural beauty, so that you would need less "cover ups".

Rejuvenation therapy

Purva karma and pancha karma are very important ayurvedic cleansing treatments. The goal of these treatments is to remove all the impurities of the body, so that the body would be gotten rid of the illnesses it had or were about to manifest. Also, when the body is completely clean inside and outside, it can get the full benefit from nourishing.

The nourishing treatments are also described in detail. Different types of oils and herbal supplements are listed in this chapter.

Another massage section

The Ayurvedic Beauty Care book offers various massage techniques for different parts of the body, together with the relevant oils. There are pictures and clear drawings provided to make it easy for you to do your own massage, or massage someone else in an effective way.

Unusual treatments

In the final chapter of the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book some unusual treatments are described. They are unusual in the West, but these treatments are widely known in the East.

For example in Netra Basti treatment, a warmed butter is poured over an open eye. This is claimed to improve the eyesight and the general condition of the eyes (e.g. it makes the eyes brighter).

Another interesting treatment is called "Shiro Dhara", which is running a stream of warm sesame oil onto the third eye area. This is supposed to affect certain brain centers to give you a feeling of pleasure and relaxation. It removes pain and stress particularly in the neck and head areas.

There are other interesting treatments described in this last section.

My opinion about the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book

I should admit that I loved the book. Rarely do I keep the books for reference, but this book is still with me because of the essential oils chart, great natural shampoo recipes as well as the tips for facial care.

I recommend the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book for anyone who wants to improve their inner and outer beauty. It's written in an easy to understand manner and many tips in the book are extremely effective.

How to Start a Home-Based Personal Trainer Business: *Turn your fitness passion to profit *Get trained and certified *Set your own schedule *Establish ... everybody wants!I started thumbing through this at a friends house. I was just using it as a time killer as I have no aspirations of becoming a personal trainer, but after a few pages I really got taken in by the writing. The author writes in a very easy to read, conversational style. The author's personal experiences, shown in sidebars, gave me the feeling like I was talking to a friend who just happened to know a ton about personal training.

Not to say that the book isn't in depth, as it does a great job of breaking down everything you could possibly have to think about when starting a business. After reading this starting any business seems possible, not just a personal training one. It's very concise without losing the reader in the details. In fact the authors writing style kept me engrossed with the in depth details provided.

If you're thinking of starting any home based business, this book will be helpful. Let alone a home based personal training one. Hell, it made me think I could start one, and trust me, I'm nobodies idea of a personal trainer.
