The Yoga Body Diet: Slim and Sexy in 4 Weeks (Without the Stress)

The Yoga Body Diet: Slim and Sexy in 4 WeeksI picked up The Yoga Body Diet two days ago, and even just reading the first few chapters has been a tremendous help. This book is great. Before buying this book, I already did yoga at a studio but it was really interesting to see my dosha (and I found it very accurate) and to discover that the type of yoga I already did and enjoyed was the one suitable for my dosha! I also really enjoyed the list of food suitable for your dosha, I thought that was an interesting twist and it was also neat to see that a lot of the food I already enjoyed most was on it.

The first part of the book is to slowly guide you through your four weeks. You spend a chapter looking at the total four weeks, and then there's a chapter that follows for each week which focuses on adding new steps to your routine to get you closer to your new union of mind and body. After week one, you take a quiz to see what your main dosha (attribute, there are three of them) is and each dosha has it's own unique chapter to illustrate your personality, pitfalls that may cause you to gain weight, what type of foods you should focus on eating as well as what type of yoga is good for your dosha. Week two focuses more on getting into yoga (whereas week one is on mindful eating and breathing), eating healthier (and for your dosha). Week three gives you harder work outs, and focuses on shrinking your dinner portions (you should eat a larger lunch, with a smaller dinner). Week four is where you continue to shrink your dinner work out even more intensely, and try to move your dinner time to an earlier time (to help burn fat and with digestion). Once you finish week four, you're done and then you enter in maintenance mode which is meant to maintain your new sexy, slim body.

After you finish the first 94 pages, the rest of the book includes recipes and an illustrated guide for the yoga poses highlighted in the book. I'm a bit of a recipe collector, so I'm really enjoying reading all the recipes, and I found the variations of the recipe suitable for your dosha to be a really nice bonus. The next section of this book is an illustrated guide of the poses so that if you're new to yoga (or need a refresher), you can see what the poses look like for your work out routine. After this section, there is a sample menu for you to follow for each week.

The only thing I wish that this book included was just some more information about the history and philosophy of yoga. I understand that the authors didn't want to overwhelm the readers, especially people who are new to it but it would have been nice if it was more than a small little blurb. I think I also would have enjoyed if the chapters were a bit longer and went into more detail. Regardless, this book is still excellent.

I'm excited to start my yoga body diet, and I think a lot of the advice offered in this book is a really great way to not only introduce people into yoga, but to show people who are already into yoga another level of where their practice can go. It's one thing to practice yoga for exercise, but another to delve into the whole mind body union which this book really emphasizes. Who doesn't want to healthy, calm, sexy, AND slim?

As with any book claiming to give you the quintessential "Body" with a few easy steps I was skeptical. But this book illuminated some easy lifestyle changes (how the body naturally cleanses at night if you don't indulge at night...) that I could incorporate with my yoga practice. I've read other books on Ayerveda and its health benefits but often felt lost and hopeless -that I would never be able to integrate its principles into my busy and always changing day to day. This book was written with clear, concise and easy to follow instructions on how to live by these principles with a fun voice. You'll discover so much about your current state of health and the next page presents the solutions for a better you! Yoga, health and self is a constant study and practice and this book is a refreshing voice.

I have been waiting for this book, and it's finally here! I was introduced to ayurveda and yoga last year, and it has been a blessing. This practice has change my life. This has been a daily learning through Chopra books and Dr Douillard he is one of my favorites, and the main reason to buy this book.

The Yoga body diet book has a brief history about yoga, and ayurveda before takes you to the plans week by week. The book also has a test to help you find your doshas, and if you are not familiar with the word, don't worry this book will explain you what it is. After you do the test, you will follow everything that its recommended to you by your dosha. Its amazing you will learn what to eat for your body type dosha and all the yoga poses that will benefit your type. Is like having a manual for your health. I have to say that this books it's very close to the 3 season diet, so if you have the book you probably feel you reading the same book, but of course this has more details, and it has more yoga. I gave this book 4 stars because the authors did not included a page with all the poses to be detach from the book. If you are not familiar with the poses it will be hard to go to the pages looking for your yoga poses, and it will make your practice very stressful. Overall is a good book.

I wasn't going to read this book, based upon the "slim and sexy" claim in just four weeks. Just like claims that are too good to be true, unless you have only a few pounds to lose and you are already sexy, you aren't going to get there in four weeks. I also disagree with the back of the book that proudly reads that you'll get "a long and lean yoga body without all the work". Um, no. The yoga poses are challenging and you will sweat, so there will be work.

Though I had written off the book based on the cover (yes, a bad habit, I know), I heard good things about it so I thought I'd check it out. I'm glad I did. Yoga Body Diet gives a good grounding in Ayurvedic eating (fully explained in the book, with a quiz to help you identify your own personalized plan), as well as good strategies such as stopping snacking, no eating before bed, eating organically and seasonally.

I enjoyed the explanation of Ayurveda, the poses best suited for each dosha, good recipes personalized for each type and a shopping list tailored to the dosha. The yoga poses are diagrammed at the back of the book and the explanations seem good but I would be concerned that any newbie to yoga could get injured in some of the advanced poses that are included here. The authors suggest finding a yoga class for instruction and pose correction, but there should be some caveats on poses like shoulderstand, crow, plank folks with more pounds to lose could get hurt trying these poses before they are ready. Modifying poses is perfectly acceptable if your body isn't ready for the full posture.

If the reader is realistic in his/her expectations, this book could be a smart way to improve your energy, your strength, your flexibility and your waistline. Blurbs on covers sell books but the facts inside are what counts.

I've been following this plan for 3 months now and I am so much more toned and lean than ever! My posture is better and stress bothers me less. I do feel more sexy because my body looks and feels better, too. Though I've dabbled in yoga for years the Yoga Body Diet book motivated me to do more yoga and breathing practices, which I am grateful for.

I am having fun with the yoga plans too. Instead of just sticking with the plans for my body type (Vata dosha), I use different plans based on how I'm feeling. For example I was really irritated and upset last week so I followed the yoga plan for the Pitta type which helps calm down 'fire'. And wow I felt so much calmer. Also this winter I felt a bit heavy and sad, so I focused on the yoga for Kapha instead, which helped me stay more energized and up beat (hallelujah!).

This book is definitely aimed towards us ladies, rather than also men, but the title and cover make that pretty obvious.

If you are brand new to yoga it is always good to do some classes in person with a certified teacher to ensure your form is correct.

I recommend this book especially to people who are new to Ayurveda (or natural health), or are overwhelmed with more traditional approaches to Ayurveda which typically include Sanskrit terms, strict protocols, and require a lot more time. I happen to love all that but many people can be turned off by Ayurveda when it seems too 'religious', 'difficult' or 'austere'. The authors make it all simple, doable and applicable to a modern busy lifestyle. Even pleasurable!

I keep this book by my yoga matt to keep me inspired.

The Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's Life

The Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's LifeI read The Living Beauty Detox Program and began the outlined programs approximately two months ago. I start every day with the "Living Beauty Elixer" and fiber cleanse supplement recommended in the book. This book establishes specific detox and diet programs for every season as well as an overall system detox called the Fat Flush. This program has been extremely successful for me and I continue to feel better every day without any major detoxification side effects! The Living Beauty Detox Program is an excellent read and is complete in its recommendations and how-tos. A definite MUST READ for anyone concerned with their well-being and overall health.

The Living Beauty Detox Program has encouraged me to look at ways I can take steps to feel better and enjoy life. After being on the spring detox program, my hair looks better, I've lost weight (in the right places) and my skin looks great. Ann Louise has done a superb job of making sense out of how we can feel young and youthful again. Thank you Ann Louise! I can't tell you what a difference this book has made in my life.

This book is packed with information that every woman regardless of her age will want--and need--to know. There are easy-to-understand insights on how estrogen mimics affect our health and how many of the things we do and take add to the problem--and most importantly, destroy our beauty. I found the detox diet and beauty routines so helpful I'm giving both of my daughters the book as a present.

I read this book at about the same time as Ann Louise Gittleman's "Fat Flush Plan," and both books were very similar, and very effective. Ms. Gittleman takes the time to explain in layman's language how food is used by the body.

The fact that she breaks things down by seasons adds a little variety. Good detail is provided on what to eat to achieve better health and especially how to detoxify your poor body.

I have given this book as a gift, it was so helpful.

Folks, This Ain't Normal: A Farmer's Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World

Folks, This Ain't Normal: A Farmer's Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better WorldWhy do I love this book? There are so many reasons. It's a book I was not able to put down or stop thinking about. It made me feel frustrated and hopeful all at the same time. It is funny and insightful. I care about my food and how it is raised. I want my kids to be allergy free and play in the woods. I want to curl up next to a real wood fire after a long day of working hard and sweating. I want to eat eggs from happy chickens that I raise free from corn and gmo soy. This book makes me feel like those things are possible. It was a paradigm shift for me. I hope a lot of people read this book and take up the fight for the small local farm.

Greatest book. We pre-ordered this book expecting it to be awesome, and it is! My husband and I have been reading it aloud every morning during coffee time. It's an inspiring book. Encouraging us to get off our hineys and do something! Anything, just get off the couch and stop accepting the status quo and THINK! :)

Yes folks, we have decided to give this book to everyone on our Christmas list this year. I am reading this book on my Droid in Kindle format and can not put it down. I have known Joel personally for more than a dozen years and he was one of my mentors as I started my own pastured poultry farm coming from a CAFO poultry background. So needless to say, there is little in this book which is new to me but he tells it in style and in a way which is so much more effective than any way I could say it. But for the average person this book will be a different perspective. What he says has great universal truth, from how to raise children to how to heal the planet.

For me, my great hope is that this book does become number ONE on the NY Times best seller list for the more people who read this book, then a better world we will have. This book is a must read by all who want a better world.

Joel Salatin is a genius, and in my opinion, a hero of the people. If you have an inkling of doubt about mainstream food sources or want to know if "organic" is really the way to go, you will get a LOT from this book. There is so much about the current mainstream food ideology that are fabrications of mega food corporations and government agencies. The current system is in place to crank out huge profits, not to promote health and nutrition for citizens. I have read several books on food issues, and this one ranks in the top 2-3 for me. It definitely adds a new angle that cannot be found in other literature on the subject (namely more detail on food policy/legislation, which blew my mind!). More people need to be enlightened to the honest, historically-supported truth that America's approach to food AIN'T NORMAL. Amen, Joel! Please read/listen to this book, and then share it with a friend!

All Natural Dental Remedies: Herbs and Home Remedies to Heal Your Teeth & Naturally Restore Tooth En

All Natural Dental Remedies: Herbs and Home Remedies to Heal Your Teeth & Naturally Restore Tooth EnamelThe author did her research and presents a practical guide. Her disclosure is follows which describes what is important about this book.

The purpose of the book as clearly stated, "the purpose of "All Natural Dental Remedies" is not to make an argument for alternative dentistry or against conventional dentistry; nor is it to persuade anyone that one way of doing things is superior to another. Rather, it is to present practical information about the health and healing of the teeth and gums in a matter-of-fact way for informational purposes.

And as she continues to say, "There is nothing mysterious or mystical about re-mineralizing teeth and naturally restoring tooth enamel. Yet, despite the renaissance of information about other aspects of natural healing, natural dental care is a subject that has not been much discussed. This is partly because to talk about natural dental enamel growth or healing of cavities is heresy against the official dental establishment. And, it is partly because when people believe there is no solution to a problem, they don't bother to look for one."

I have heard about re-mineralizing teeth naturally and the book provides a good guide for the process. The book provides practical formulas or remedies, "the types of remedies presented include nutritional, herbal, mineral and other alternative remedies. Unfortunately, there is very little mainstream scientific research on alternative dental remedies, so we must rely largely on folk lore and what is called "anecdotal" evidence."

I am grateful for her work and hope more people take responsibility for their own health and tooth care.

Hospital Gowns and Other Embarrassments: A Teen Girl's Guide to Hospitals

Hospital Gowns and Other Embarrassments: A Teen Girl's Guide to HospitalsVery helpful and insightful for the target audience (I'd personally recommend it to patients, their family members, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers who may invade other's privacy and comfort zone). Perry discusses several patients he worked with while employed at a children's hospital and discusses simple helpful lessons he learned to help make his patients more comfortable, earn trust, and reduce embarrassment to the patient--as well as discussing how the patient and family can let the caregivers know how to take care of them and respect them.

Perry has done a great service for teen girls and hospital workers in this raw and honest narrative. As a college instructor, I was impressed by the superb writing that gave readability to a difficult subject matter. As a person who has known the mortifying experience of being a self-conscious teen girl in a cold, foreign environment to be physically invaded, I was eternally grateful that someone finally took the time to address this issue. Teen girls will find comfort in Perry's words. The children he describes will find a place in your heart. Without giving anything away, I was especially touched by the loveable little Binky and his lessons. This is a must-read for all.

Perry does a wonderful job of showing the struggle that healthcare professionals face, between giving patients real quality care and meeting the expectations of the administration. By giving teens & family vital insight about the environment inside the Hospitals today, they can understand how the system works and how their choices are a huge part of how comfortable their stay will be. The information he provides is absolutely essential and is unknown to most people, let alone a teenage girl. He explains the complex in's and out's in a way that anyone could understand, this book gives girls critical knowledge & motivates them to be involved in their care while staying in the hospital. That's why I recommend this book, not just as a survival guide to teen girls, but also to families of young girls, as well as All Healthcare Professionals. This Book sheds light on a subject not very welcomed by the healthcare community, revealing necessary truth bringing greater awareness to how serious these issues are. Perry brings this point home in saying,

"...If anything we can forget something physical (meaning pain) more easily than we can forget something psychological (such as embarrassment)...It's true that for pain there's often a pill, while there's no pill for embarrassment. But the treatment for embarrassmenta little kindness and some staff flexibilityis more effective than that for pain. It also costs nothing and has no side effects. That's why I think hospitals should treat embarrassment as seriously as they do pain."

Easy Exercises: Simple Workout Routine For Busy People In The Office, At Home, Or On The Road

Easy Exercises: Simple Workout Routine For Busy People In The Office, At Home, Or On The RoadThis book is perfect for me! As a busy working mom, I needed go to guide for exercising with limited time. The author makes some great points about the benefits of exercise; circulation and maintaining a good (but light) full body exercise routine which I need. I love the variety of exercises as it keeps me from getting bored and quitting. It is very well written and lots of pictures to show each exercise. The pictures show you what to do and what not to do, in order to keep you accountable. The author wrote with humor and `real talk' about the expectations and results from sticking to a workout plan that works best for me. I really like the book and will recommend it to my friends to read.

This book started out with a general disclaimer, warning the reader to always consult with a doctor before any change in diet and medication, and following on in his introduction Mr Bennet did state that extreme exercise programmes can be dangerous for the individual. The author then quite simply explains what exercise is, and how it affects the body, and how even a light workout that uses your whole body can provide benefits. It's not all about gym gym gym. It is almost 30% into the book before we start to read about the routines.

However once you reach the routines, not only are they simply explained, but there are photographs with them to show you exactly what is meant. The other thing that I like about this book is that the author understands that different people will be at different levels of fitness, and while running through the exercises with in the book, he tells you to only push yourself as far as you feel comfortable.

One thing that I should note, and I think this may be my failing more so than a misleading title, when I downloaded this book, I misunderstood that these were exercises you could do in the office, at home or on the road, i.e. I thought they were ones that could be done within these environments. Whereas these were a mixture of jumping jacks, squats and push-ups.

Buy Easy Exercises: Simple Workout Routine For Busy People In The Office, At Home, Or On The Road Now

Patrick Barrett's Easy Exercises does a really good job explaining the reasons you should integrate an exercise program into your daily routine. It doesn't have to be a full-blown workout in order to really make a difference in your life. Patrick links the fundamental biology to our every day lives in a way that just about anyone can understand.

He goes on to explain the various exercises that just about anyone can perform in what seems like 10 mins a day or less. This makes a regular exercise routine seem much less daunting and much less of a time commitment than so many other exercise books.

Actually it seems almost too easy. One of the elements I thought could be elaborated on are the specific benefits of each exercise and how they integrate to provide a total body workout. Of course, this is likely the point an average person does not need a 'total body workout' if they're goal is really just to improve their overall health.

I would really recommend this book and Patrick's approach to anyone looking to just get a routine started and to increase their overall energy level in a short period of time.

This book has completely changed the way I look at "exercising"! I always thought that you had to spend 30 60 minutes doing some hard cardio or weigh-lifting to get the "benefits" of exercise. Well, Mr. Barrett starts this book by explaining that is NOT necessarily true. That was hard to believe at first but, after following his recommendations for just over two weeks, I agree with him!

Barrett makes the case that there are a lot of different reasons and benefits for exercising. Most people immediately assume people want to exercise to lose weight. I wasn't really trying to lose weight I was trying to increase my energy level, not feel so sluggish throughout the day. Barrett explains how exercise increases circulation, makes your body healthier, and, thus, you have more energy. That all sounded great when I read it but, I was looking for a QUICK workout that I could do without any special equipment and, I only had about 10 minutes in the morning to do this. Would his routine work for me?

The simple answer is YES it was exactly what I was looking for! Barrett offers a very simple, base workout routine that can be done in 5 minutes! The key is to do it correctly and consistently. He also includes options to increase the intensity IF YOU WANT.

I have been doing this routine for a little over 2 weeks and, I can definitely say that I DO feel the benefits! I AM more energentic and I just feel better throughout the day. I have actually started doing the base routine twice a day since it is so quick once in the morning and once at lunch time. My goal was to feel better and have more energy. This has been the perfect solution. It WORKS for me!

In general, I really like this author's writing style it is funny and engaging. I also bought Barrett's book on Hand and Forearm Exercise because I am at a computer all day Hand And Forearm Exercises: Grip Strength Workout And Training Routine. Hoping that book is as useful and fun to read as this one!

First Aid Manual

First Aid ManualIt shows how classic some information is and some things don't change. But others do change. CPR techniques had changes especially after learning about the AED+CPR technique from Singapore Armed Forces. How to handle cuts are too simple to have much changes and the main differences is the multitude of products to do first aids or the personal preferences of the first aider.

I am now a trained military medic and this book gives comprehensive information that balances well for beginners and yet not to be a dull reading for the experts. Lots of pictures and clear simple explanation is really the mark of DK books so it is difficult for me let it go until I learn much of CPR had changed and being a medic (for myself) for almost a decade means I can finally let this go. I believe I have enough of experience that I did not have when I was in high school. Graduated from it but perhaps I will need an updated version after 15 years.

Strength Training For Women: Tone Up, Burn Calories, Stay Strong

Strength Training For Women: Tone Up, Burn Calories, Stay StrongI have purchased several books devoted to strength training. I have to say, this book is the best I have found--by far.

What makes this book exceptional is how thorough it is and also how much variety it offers.

Exercises for home users--both those who use dumbbells, those who use resistance bands and those who use stability balls or all of the above--are offered. Exercises for gym dwellers are also given. This book caters to everyone in a very balanced manner.

The book covers upper body, lower body, core exercises and lots of stretching ideas.

While, sometimes, strength training can get confusing because one often questions which exercises are best, how much weight you need to use and how many reps to do, this book really does simplify the whole thing.

Also, there are both modified and advanced descriptions and photos for each exercise.

Usually when you come across a book on strength training, you see the same, basic moves you've seen (and probably done) a million times before. But Joan Pagano includes variations of moves even I, a fairly experienced exerciser, had never seen before.

The layout of the book is visually stimulating. Along with photos illustrating each exercise, there are illustrations showing which body parts are being used with each move.

The book was well-written as well. Joan's instructions are concise and encouraging.

Recently, I decided I wanted to start working out during TV commercials--just to add a bit of boost to my fitness routine. I found many exercises within this book I will be doing while watching TV.

I think this is an excellent book for an advanced exercise looking for a some new ideas. But more importantly, this is an awesome resource for a beginner. I will be purchasing this book for friends and family who are daunted by the idea of doing strength training. I suggest you do the same.

I checked this book out from the library 3 weeks ago, renewed it, and now am purchasing the book.

Joan Pagano's first love is yoga, and it shows in the type of exercises in this book. She also appears to have a cross-disciplinary interest in physical therapy; I recognize several exercises (all excellent) which I learned from physical therapists in recovering from injuries.

I give Ms. Pagano an A+ for both clarity and variety. The book has clear descriptions of exercises, and excellent photos with a white dotted line showing the muscles each exercise is supposed to work. I was able to understand how to properly perform several stretches which had been unclear in other books. The variety is excellent, including many exercises for rubber resistance bands and for those big, fun, colorful stability balls. I was pleasantly surprised to find several pages on exercises for improving posture.

Where the book really shines is in providing a safe, approachable beginning for women who are either very out of shape or recovering from illness. For example, she de-scarifies the push-up, that ultimate symbol of military-grade fitness, by showing four less physically demanding variations in order of gradually increasing difficulty.

But I do have one major caveat: If you're hoping for a serious weight training book--which will help you build muscle--this is not the one. Ms. Pagano seems to seriously underestimate women's strength. Doesn't she know we lift grocery bags, babies and suitcases in airports? The section on push-ups, for example, fails to include the standard 'man's" push-up. I would think that working through the other four would be with a goal of getting there, to the most difficult one. Nowhere in the book does she ever show a barbell, and her choice of dumbbell weights (mostly 3-8 lbs, with a maximum of 15 pounds recommended once in the book for lat rows) is almost insulting. Three to five pounds might be okay for a beginner looking to learn proper form, but after a few weeks most women can lift a lot more. Lifting weights which don't challenge your muscles will just waste your time, and very likely lead to discouragement when you see no results.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for yoga and physical-therapy style exercises for general well-being and injury prevention. It would also be useful as an adjunct to a serious weight-training program found elsewhere--just take the weight recommendations with a grain of salt and listen to your body instead.

I bought this book to start free weight training at home. It is wonderful for home use. The author describes the benefits of weight training and how to lift weights properly(which I found very useful as a first time weight lifter). I love the descriptions that the author gives for each exercise. The author also color codes which exercises to do for each level of training. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is first starting out with free weights.

I bought this book as something to help me use the equipment at the gym. I was surprised to find it also offered exercises I can do at home without expensive equipment. The diagrams and pictures are wonderful and I absolutely love the page that shows the muscles so if I want to have a targeted workout I can pick a few muscles and easily find the pages that show me how to do the exercises. The best part is there is no expensive equipment to buy to do the exercises. I've taken this book to the gym to follow the exercises and now the gym is selling it! Several co-workers and friends have also borrowed it and are interested in getting their own copy.

Toxic Free: How to Protect Your Health and Home from the Chemicals ThatAre Making You Sick

Toxic Free: How to Protect Your Health and Home from the Chemicals ThatAre Making You SickAfter hearing the author interviewed on public radio, I decided to buy this book. It is extremely informative and easy to read. It covers toxic substances contained in our everyday products and what they do to our health. What I liked was the information on solutions--how to avoid the toxic substances we encounter every day. The author's website is also a great resource as it lists manufacturers of products free of toxic substances. I have started patronizing these companies and avoiding ones that include toxins in their products.

This book is a must for anyone concerned about toxic substances we encounter every day.

We live in a world of physical and emotional pollution. Everything is driven by profit motives, and very little concern for the health of individuals or the environment is exercised by those selling products. We ignorantly believe the happy advertising blitz we absorb every day, while slowly exposing our cells to poisons that are producing rampant cancers, behavior disorders and low energy. Although most people prefer to live in the "ignorance is bliss" mentality, this book is for those who are proactive in their lives, and who are not over-stressed by the pain of thinking. Don't miss reading this book, especially if you have developing children in your home. It will drastically cleanse your immediate environment of packaged poisons we purchase every day to make our lives "better." Let the buyer beware!

The author promotes the use of zeolite mineral in this book. Otherwise, I would have given this book 4 stars for the good information.

The author, Debra Dadd, of Toxic Free fails to inform the reader that dry zeolite in powder form can cause Mesothelioma if the dust is inhaled, similar to asbestos. Dadd recommends that the reader purchase zeolite online, presumably in powder form, as an alternative to commercially available air freshener. She provides zero warnings to the reader for zeolite in the powder form. The author also promotes liquid zeolite as if it is a proven detox. Liquid zeolite has unproven health benefits and has even shown damaging health impacts to mice in some studies.

In my opinion, these claims by the author are irresponsible. In the case of dry zeolite, she might as well have told the reader to use asbestos as an air freshener and not mentioned the potentially lethal health impacts. A disclaimer needs to be added in the book regarding the use of zeolite.

Our daughter had been telling for many years to stop poisoning our bodies and our life with toxic products; but, not able to find many alternatives (I thought), we did as much as we could. This book brought home the issues with the products we use and what we can do to stop using those products. We now use vinegar a lot and make our own soap. We are also using as much organic food as we can find in a small town and supporting local organic farmers.

Staying Power: Age-Proof Your Home for Comfort, Safety and Style

Staying Power: Age-Proof Your Home for Comfort, Safety and StyleThis is a very valuable book for people like me, in my 70's and planning to continue to live at home. It's also valuable for the grown children of older people. It alerts them to signs that parents need help and tactfully suggests how to do some needed interventions. I like that each chapter discusses the impairments people may become subject to and then goes on to recommend ways to avoid or ameliorate problems. Since there are so many ideas (22 pages on falls alone) I appreciated that at the end of each chapter there are lists of things to do and resources, so one does not have to go back and skim through the chapter to get the desired information. In addition, there's a very fine list of resources such as government agencies, specialized books, and places to buy equipment at the end of the book The book has some of the information we've read about, but much much more. Who knew that fires are the second leading cause of injuries to older people? I've started to implement some of the suggestions for keeping to my medicine schedule, and will certainly implement other things as I go along. Definitely a book to buy and keep handy!!!!

This book was in my handbag on a cross country flight from San Francisco to New York--where I headed to visit my Dad, being treated for cancer and my Mom, who is caring for him.

Both of my parents are in their eighties and live independently in a two story colonial home--I am 55.

This book is written in a friendly, common sense tone. I knew that I had come to the right place when I read in the introduction that the book would focus on "things you can do relatively quickly without superior strength or elaborate tools."

And so it does. Upon arrival at my parent's home, I immediately took stock of Rachel's Top Tips for A Stable Home (page 65), investigating tripping hazards, talking to my folks about safer footwear, (I ordered socks with traction features on the bottom, a.k.a. hospital socks) and making sure that furniture that my Dad might hold on to for support on his way to the bathroom in the middle of the night was "strong and stable."

Mind you, not every suggestion that I made was met with delight, but author Adelson offers a list of books that can help adult kids communicate with their older parents who may be resistant to change.

The list of resources and recommended reading at the back of the book also helped to get me in touch with the National Association of Geriatric Care Managers--private health and human service specialists who help families care for older relatives.

The section, Bits and Pieces--Working Out Wherever--offered helpful exercise tips for the entire family.

I especially liked the encouraging tip, "if it is not possible to do what was done before, celebrate and develop what can be done now." That is a lesson for all of us over fifty!

You can read this book all at one time, as I did on my five hour flight. Or you can dip into it as needed for advice from Adelson, a journalist with graduate certificates in aging and public health, who offers personal anecdotes, as well.

Highly recommended--in print and Kindle editions--where you can adjust the type size for easier reading!

While there are tips in areas you might expect, such as accessibility and safety, you will also find information on less expected topics, for example, how to promote good nutrition in spite of a declining sense of taste. Best of all, the book is readable and even amusing at times. It is an invaluable handbook in this era of aging boomers. Highly recommended.

The Home Chef’s Kitchen Medical Emergency Guide

The Home ChefÂ’s Kitchen Medical Emergency GuideBoy, the cover says it all! Having spent enough time around restaurant kitchens, working along side an ice carver for banquets and special dinner affairs, and watching my friends cook food in their kitchens and grill on their barbecues, I can vouch for the usefulness of a book such as this and having it around. Beyond having a simple, handy, easy to read and reach home health self-reference guide in the unfortunate accident event for family, friends and special dinner guests, one of its virtues is in reading beforehand---hopefully, for prevention--to heighten the "weekend chef's" awareness of the types of things that could happen or just go wrong. Also, the book is funny, which doesn't hurt.

The Spirited Walker: Fitness Walking For Clarity, Balance, and Spiritual Connection

The Spirited Walker: Fitness Walking For Clarity, Balance, and Spiritual ConnectionI enjoyed this books suggestions on using mantras to encourage yourself to go that extra distance. It is written with the beginner and beyond in mind to motivate you to bring more "sacredness" in to a simple act that we often take for granted. It isn't packed with alot of technical information about aerobic walking but does suggest reliable resources for the absolute beginner. It also includes the author and other's stories of "flagging motivation" and how they were able to overcome it by bringing more mindfulness to the situation. This is key not only in walking but in life in general (try the mantra exercise the next time you need motivation to get that laundry folded or wash those dishes!) If you're looking for something to motivate you to put more "pep in your step" this is one great book to do it.

Though not a race walker, I'm well beyond fittness walking, walking faster than many others run. It's hard to find a book that takes you beyond fittness walking, but this one does. It has plenty of material for the beginning or average fittness walker, but also has lots of exercises for those who are ready to take thier practice to the upper levels.

I also love the fact that there are also plenty of exercises for those who would like to combine thier spiritual practices with thier fittness routine. This is very practical those of us who have many demands on our lives & little time to go around.

The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice

The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal PracticeNo introduction is needed for the author (son of famous yogacharya Sri T Krishnamacharya). I got interested in yoga after reading his series of articles in Indian magazines in late 1980s. First of all, this book is not an explanation of yoga poses (I recommend Light on Yoga for that). I first bought the book thinking its another book about yoga poses. But I was wrong. This book is exactly what the title says how to develop a personal practice. The emphasise of the book is for the practitioner to observe himself/herself and see how he/she can augment the benefits of the poses. This is an invaluable and a very important step in learning yoga.

Now, everytime I read it I find it throws more light on understanding yoga. I used to do yogic poses mechanically, but now I have a different perspective. The book really makes you think about an asana and how to improve yourself to benefit from it (the term for this is viniyoga). The emphasis is on gradually learning and enjoying each pose instead of hurrying to accomplish some asana. There are several tips for maximizing the benefits of asanas for eg counterposes, developing breathing techniques by observing oneself etc. The explanation is lucid, the writing is so simple and effective. Several common questions are answered in Q&A format which is very helpful.

The second part of the book contains Patanjali's yoga sutras in Sanskrit and followed by explanations in English. (Yoga sutras are the foundations of yogas in other words the heart of yoga). The explanations are very simple and easy to understand.

I own a lot of books on yoga and this is one of my favorite introductions. What makes it particularly valuable is that it explains how to construct a practice. This allows the reader to intelligently use other resources and link his or her yoga practice to overaching physical, psychological and spiritual principles.

I also found this volume to be well balanced. It covered a lot of ground and had a broad scope, but it was not overwhelming in any way. It really did a great job of covering the essentials of yoga philosophy, principles of joining breath with movement, connecting poses and varying poses.

The book also contains a good introduction to pranayama and presents the basics of the bandhas. The material on the mental and moral application of yoga are also well done, but not over done. I also liked that the book included a pronunciation guide for Sanskrit and 60 pages of a translation of parts of the yoga sutras of Patanjali with insightful commentary.

If you are looking for a book that explains how to do particular asanas, then this isn't your best choice although it does include a short section on Four General Practice Sequences.

This book does NOT provide detailed instruction on how to perform particular asanas. For this, you might try 30 Essential Yoga Poses by Judith Lasater, Dancing the Body of Light by Dona Holleman (a must have) or Back Care Basics by Mary Pullig Schatz M.D. (don't let the title full you, it's a great general introduction to yoga, especially for people starting later in life).

The Heart of Yoga will compliment any of the books above, which are not nearly as strong with respect to how to construct a yoga practice on your own.

I am dismayed that so many members think of yoga as part of a new age mentality that is the antithesis of religion or an alternative to any faith. "The Heart of Yoga" by Desikachar does much to dispel this myth. Yoga is not a religion, although for the vast part of its existence has been practiced by people who have adhered to Hinduism. Yoga is a comprehensive approach to mental and physical health, which may fall under the rubric of alternative health systems, but as it has existed for millennia, there is nothing "new" about its age.

Desikachar's book discusses the history of yoga and its practicality for today. A copy of Patanjali's "Yoga Sutra" is included in the appendix of the book. The Yoga Sutra is a collection of inspirational maxims for how to approach life. In some of their writing they acknowledge one's connection to a divine entity, or a concept greater than our selves, but it never defines this entity or commands any sort of conceptualization for what many would refer to as God.

Yoga is more than just a series of poses, which have gained popularity as an exercise fad. It is a philosophy that commands the respect of life and recommends dietary practices to purges the body of yama, which we could be referred to as toxins; the accumulation of which make a person prone to disease and mental anxiety. Poses also have therapeutic benefits in that they release hormones and antibodies in addition to toxins, by compressing, stretching, and releasing various glands and muscles of the body. Desikachar writes about the history of experienced yoga teachers, who did not design one series of yoga poses for every one, but looked at the needs of particular individuals and assigned poses based on their needs; such as did the person have trouble sleeping, digesting food, or a physical ailment that needed to be addressed. He offers suggestions for poses that can help address common maladies, as well as a series of poses that address the mot popular affliction that people from the modern world suffer.

The book also spends much time on teaching the reader on how the physical practice can be spiritual; that one's approach or aversion to a particular pose may reflect a person's approach to challenges in life. One finishes the book learning how to make meditation out of movement; a practice which increase perception of ourselves and our environment.

This book is a great starting point for an understanding of yoga and what it really is.

Yoga is more then just poses to get skinny. Yoga is a way to make you happier, healthy, and strong.

If you start yoga in a class at a gym you will not learn as much as you could if read his book. Most yoga in the US is the non threatining version. An ex-aerobics instructor who took 20 hours of yoga teaching classes is not fit to teach the real yoga.

This book is not trying to change your religion. Hindus are not expected to do yoga. Any god of your choice (or no god) will do.

Yoga is a philosophy not a religion. This book gives you the why and the how. Holding poses is not yoga. You need this book to know why you do things in yoga. If you read this, your practice of yoga will be better and you will get 100 times more out of it.

Buy the book before you buy any other yoga book.

Desikachar does and excellent job of providing an overview of yoga and adds enough depth to come away with some practical techniques. I read this book after having a fair amount of yoga experience and it really solidified my sense of direction. I would also highly recommend it for someone new to yoga because they will get a good sense of the more complete traditional yoga. It provides a context of understanding about the true goal of yoga which is not just a glorified body.

Take Me Home: Walking on Sacred Ground in the Last Stage of Life

Take Me Home: Walking on Sacred Ground in the Last Stage of LifeDuring a time in life which can feel so very alone and frightening, Liza Johnson extends her hand to the reader to offer wisdom, compassion, comfort, and a new vision in her book: Take Me Home: Walking on Sacred Ground in the Last Stage of Life. In a style which is so readable that I felt myself turning one page and then another and then another until I was almost finished with the book, Liza shares her vision of dealing with our elderly parents. Chapter titles like:" Dawn Magic," "The Accident," "The Jewelry Box,"" My Garden," and "The Red Buffalo" give you a hint of the flavor of the book. Rather than seeing those you care for as a burden (although this reality is certainly represented), she presents the idea that if you enter into this stage of life with openness, you can deepen your relationships, increase your ability to love, experience your spirituality, and reap gifts way beyond what you might have expected.

Liza begins with the personal memoir of her journey with her mother. It is filled with the everyday experiences of dealing with an aging parent yet the reader is introduced to a bigger picture through the unique way Liza shares her own process and writes about memories, nature, people, and spirituality.

The second section of the book consists of personal stories by caregivers. Each is different and yet organized into themes like: "The Last Stage of Life," "Waking up to Mortality: The Caregiver's Call to Face Death," Alzheimer's: Lost and Sometimes Found," and "Waking up to the Mystical."

The last section is called: "The Inner Home" and provides the reader with a method Liza developed to help find some place of peace during her struggles and discoveries with her mother.

This book is a jewel; a gift to the reader going through the sometimes excruciating and yet heart-deepening journey of caregiving. I highly, highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful book, so beautifully written as a memoir and a guide. I could hardly put it down. Ms. Johnson is a storyteller. She invites the reader into a community of those giving care to an aging parent with all the ups and downs. To know that there are others with similar problems, anguish, fears, and joys gives comfort and inspiration. Ms. Johnson transforms this experience with ideas and exercises that help care givers give care to themselves during stressful moments. She illuminates what we all ultimately face: loss and grief. Thinking of aging parents and loved ones, too, Ms. Johnson extends a hand and a hug with her thoughtfulness and her story.

Buy Take Me Home: Walking on Sacred Ground in the Last Stage of Life Now

One of the most important and relevant social topics of our time is dealing with aging parents and the emotional, physical and spiritual process it involves.

"Take Me Home' by Liza Johnson guided me through a time when I was faced with the overwhelming sadness, pain and helplessness of losing both of my parents. With recounts of her personal experiences in stories such as " the birch tree" she helped me to understand that a parent can still be a parent even if they have lost almost all their faculties. That dying and being there at a loved ones death can ultimately enrich the caregiver rather than deplete her. After death, feelings of pain and loss can be transformed ino memories of comfort and support such as in the chapters of "flowers and candy " and "free at last."

Her spirituality and her beautiful discriptions of nature encourages us to find peace in our natural surroundings.

This book is so raw and heartfelt. Ms. Johnson gives us all a gift to expose her most fragile, vulnerable emotion in a desire to help us search and fully understand our own.

Truely, a must read.

The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person

The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin PersonI have lost 90 pounds using the principles and techniques in this book. How can that be true when the book has been out for only one week? No tricks here early in 2006 ( a year ago) I began a self-designed plan of eating right and exercising based on 2 things: 1. my many years of familiarity with every new diet and nutritional research discovery regarding weight loss; and 2. participation in a cognitive therapy-based group called DBT which teaches skills to increase emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, etc. A couple of months ago I started getting the Amazon plogs regarding Dr. Beck's new book, and I enthusiastically pre-ordered. After almost a year of steady weight loss and working my way up to walking 3 miles a day (with Leslie Sansone DVDs)I had stalled out at minus 90 lbs, and need to lose about 30 more pounds. Receiving the book, I was amazed, because almost everything I did to motivate myself over the last 13 months was contained in this work. Of course, the principles are set forth much more methodically, professionally, and with more of a well-developed theoretical basis, than in my home-made plan, but every sentence in the Beck Diet rings with honesty, integrity, thoughtfulness, compassion and hope.

To be more specific, the book does not contain a "diet" and you are told to find a suitable nutritious food plan to follow, along with an exercise plan of your own. The strategies presented in the book do indeed 'talk' you through cognitive retraining techniques which change your thoughts about food and eating and hunger: identifying positive outcomes; ways to make a choice NOT to indulge; how to effectively deal with set-backs and limit the damage done; how to say no to friends /family who show love by sharing good food (I'm Italian; I know a LOT of them!)

Interestingly, in the first 2 weeks you don't diet at all this is time spent planning and strategizing to re-train your thoughts. This involves completing motivational cards where you write statements to counteract any sabotaging thoughts that will come up. I found the process to be so similar to the strategies I used when I was successful in meeting the inevitable temptation, so I know that it works "in action."

On the 15th day you start your eating plan, and each day you have a checklist for reviewing the motivational materials (Advantage Cards, for example, list what YOU want to accomplish in losing weight.) Some of the basic concepts are to pre-plan for dangerous situations, acknowledge your accomplishments even if not perfect, and realize that resisting hunger and cravings is possible when you commit to using the skills Dr. Beck presents.

I have read many, many books both on weight loss and psychology, and this book is "the one" for me, and I hope for you. You have to be willing to think ahead about eating, hunger and cravings. You have to commit to following the techniques daily. If you do, this WILL WORK!!!!

I am going to be bold enough to add one additional technique that worked very well for me, and that is to "Redefine Your Treats." I admitted to a friend one day that I am basically 'treat-driven.' That is, I feel deprived and inferior in some way if I can't have a dessert, or eat a hearty portion of food. So I redefined treats to me now it is buying bottled water; drinking Harry and David Tiramisu Coffee (no calories!!); playing Sudoku on the computer for 20 minutes. I feel like I'm indulging but it has nothing to do with actual food. So if you are "treat-driven" like me, try defining and then indulging in your own rewards.

Reading this book made me feel positive; it made me feel like I can make it happen to lose the remaining pounds; it made me admire and respect Dr. Beck for producing a non-judgmental, encouraging, 'mindful' book that is written in an engaging style. I recommend it with 90 stars and more to come.

Six to eight years ago, I stopped spending money on diet related products. Because nothing has worked for me. Maybe initially they seemed they were working, but it was just temporarily. I saw one diet book, while I was just browsing around on amazon, "you on a diet", I thought I might wanna try that, thinking like "who knows maybe this is the thing for me", so I bought it. Even though I spent lots of money on diet products, as a book, "you on a diet" was the first book for me on dieting. And, in couple of months I purchased some other diet books, hoping one would include the missing ingredient on those.

This book,Beck Diet Solution was just released, and was at the best sellers list. I read the description. It sounded very promising, but since, at that moment I already had couple of diet books which none of them really fit in to my problem, I was skeptical. For two weeks, everyday I read the reviews, trying to see if some of the reviews was gonna convince me. I finally got it, I am so glad I did. Because that was the kind of help I was looking for.It is tryin to solve my physchological problems about eating and it is triying to re-program my brain about food.

I knew myself, I can never count calories, I can never follow a menu plan written by some other people, I can never count my steps, I can never count carbohydrates, etc...etc... My diet should be without all these stuff. So that's why this is the book for me.

She, the author asks you to make your eating plan, or if you want you can use any diet that already is out there. For me, I created my own eating plan.

Then, she just teaches you some skills which is the missing skills in people who struggle with weight and skills which all the thin people has. And these skills/behaviors are not difficult to adopt. All you need to do is just practice, practice and practice... until they are your habits. Everyday, for fourty two days, you keep learning one skill at a time, until you complete all of them in that given order. You may take your time if you need, as she suggests. For example I am in my 13th day, but it has been already 23 days since I had started. Some examples of the skills are, first day you write down the reasons you wanna get thin; third day, you learn and practice sitting down whenever you eat; fifth day, you start to practice to eat slowly, and so on. At the end of the program, you have all the equipment to think like a thin person, and to be a thin person. So far I have lost 6 pounds, and I feel like I will be able to follow my plan for a long time. She gives you that confidence. She sounds very sincere about the advice she gives. And she just takes you step by step through the journey and to the very end of the journey. With other diet books, I felt like I am just left somewhere with the tons of information I did not know what to do with, or maybe they just dictate you what to do, or sometimes have fun with your eating habits, and you feel insulted and hopeless. But in this book, BDS, I felt some love and caring about the people, she sounds like she truly wants you to lose weight.

By the way, I never write a review even though I enjoy reading them. That's how happy I am, it made me write one:) I hope this review is helpful for the people who cannot decide whether to buy it or not.

I am a medical student and have a bachelor's degree in psychology. It is widely known in both medicine and psychology that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most successful type of therapy intervention, which is why I decided to give this book a try to help myself with dieting.

Much has been made about the reasons people eat. I've heard obese people on TV say, "Food was my best friend," or "I ate to fill a void." This book does not focus on the emotionally-based underlying reasons for eating that may plague a minority of overweight people, but rather the more mundane reasons that most overweight people have for overeating boredom, fear of hunger, cravings, etc.

The book provides very useful ways of countering overeating do to various causes. Dr. Beck asks the reader to change both sabotaging thoughts (the cognitive portion) and sabotaging behaviors, such as eating quickly and eating standing up (the behavioral portion).

The book provides a day to day guide with predetermined goals and homework assignments. You must be motivated and very willing to submit to following someone else's advice. In addition, as the other reviewers have pointed out, the book does not give you specific advice for what to eat or to avoid. You must pick a separate diet to follow.

I am about half way through the book and I feel that it has definitely helped me to control my overeating. I tend to eat out of boredom in the evening. I lacked the willpower to deny myself the snacks that I knew I didn't need. Now, I look at my advantage card (which is a list of reasons I want to lose weight) whenever I feel like snacking in the evening. The book also made me realize that I ate something right before I went to bed because I was afraid that I might be hungry later. I used this "fear of hunger" as an excuse for eating when I wasn't actually hungry. As the author points out, food is almost always around, so it hardly ever makes sense to eat just to avoid getting hungry. The author really does a great job of examining the reasons why most people overeat and gives solutions for how to overcome those sabotaging thoughts by countering them with more rational, helpful thoughts.

I had been trying unsuccessfully to diet prior to starting this book. Now, since I got it 7 days ago, I have lost 2 pounds. I am recommending this book to my family and friends, and in the future I will recommend it to my patients.

I have The Beck Diet Solution, the book, which is excellent, but still purchased the audio book, to listen to while driving and doing other activities.

The Beck Diet Solution is great because it explains that proper eating is skill that can be learned, just as any other skill, like skating, knitting, or tying your shoes! It dispels the mystery behind proper eating and weight control ~ why it seems that some people are successful and some are not. It then proceeds to teach you the skill of successful dieting and weight control ~ and also teaches that to truly learn the skill, you must practice it. And as you use it, you will see success ~ I have lost 20 lbs. so far, and it has been consistent. More importantly, it also teaches you how to handle the inconsistencies, which are bound to occur, and still keep you focused on your goal.

Specifically, in regards to the audio book, the reading is clear, and the quality is excellent.

After I purchased the book, I then purchased a copy for my sister as a gift. I so strongly recommend this plan that I would recommend buying this book or audio book first before starting any eating plan, as this gives you the road map to the the Land of the Thin!

Want The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person Discount?

This book has been such a great experience for me. I'm in week four right now, and have lost about 15 pounds 10 more to go. More importantly, I know I'll be able to keep it off, because my entire attitude towards food has changed. I actually enjoy my food more now, even though I eat substantially less. I went out to eat last night with friends at a Mexican restaurant, always my downfall, and I am proud and feel good about the fact that I didn't eat any of the queso and chips, and I stopped eating when I was full, though there was still a lot of food left on my plate. I was able to enjoy eating out without feeling uncomfortably stuffed and vaguely guilty afterwards amazing! This book is not a diet this book introduces you to a new way of life, which, though you may be resistant at first, you will ultimately find much more satisfying and enjoyable.

Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your Life

Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your LifeThe author Mary Carlomagno, does an outstanding job in this short 180 page, easily readable book of giving you 52 ideas to create more time to enjoy the things you love. The answer as you can probably already guess is LESS STUFF. The book is broken down into 52 different ideas, one for each week of the year. You open to a week, and there is one or two pages as a theme. The author has put together a metaphor to teach you what she is trying to convey. After the theme, you will find several very helpful hints giving you ideas as to how to implement the concept that was just described.

One of the ways I look at book to see if I like it, is to select a couple of random pages scattered through the book. If something jumps out at me that I find interesting in 2 of the 3 random hits, I know I am onto something. When looking through this book initially, I was finding interesting ideas and actions that I could execute, in every page I looked at. I knew I was onto something here, and so I read the entire book. Let's look at just a few of the interesting thoughts and actions that she has come up with:

* Write down where your items live Interesting isn't it. She is treating an item as though it had a life of its own, and in the end, it does. You could call it the emotional lives of things we own. The objects we possess take on their own lives. You buy an exotic car, and all of a sudden you are committed to taking care of it, from washing it to changing the oil. Think before you enter into this relationship.

* The things you use the most often should have the prime real estate in your home Think about it, do you really want to fish around in a closet for something you use 3 times a week. We have to set order in our lives, and this book shows you how to do it.

* Take a vacation from your problems This is from the old Bill Murray movie. Unless it was explained to you, you would never think about it but it's true. You have a problem, you think it through. Once you have exhausted yourself thinking about it, do we really need to obsess over it for hours and days? Take a vacation from it.

* Free means free of charge; it doesn't mean it is free of space. How many of us own scores of items that we have never subsequently used but because we got it for free, we retain it, and it gobbles up space in our closets and our lives.

* If most of your time is spent with people who drain you of energy, it's time to rethink the people we are missing out on more fulfilling experiences in life. Be with people that enrich us.

* Concentrate on the joy in the process, and the results will take care of themselves.

CONCLUSION:

I found this book very valuable in terms of helping us think about the things we should already be thinking about. I have already put into effect several concepts that I learned from the author's work, and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about. Reading something new and then making your life better by implementing it? Thank you for reading this review.

Richard C. Stoyeck

This isn't a typical book about organizing because the focus is on simplifying life itself, not just the material things we collect. The author asks the reader to consider that "choosing lightness over heaviness, opting to subtract, not add" will actually open up more room mentally, emotionally, and physically to live a better life.

The book consists of 52 weekly exercises that include a personal narrative by the author, a list of suggested daily practices, and a reflection she calls "The Way". This is a term that contributes to the new-age tone of the book "Taoist-inspired" as the publisher describes it that I personally didn't care for but I was able to sift through it to the good, practical advice for leading one's life instead of it being the other way around which is why I gave it four stars instead of three.

One of the topics I appreciated was "freecycling" (week 38) that challenges the reader to consider that getting things for free isn't always a good thing and can end up becoming even more clutter. "The Way" reflection for that week says "Being addicted to the idea of acquiring something just because it is free misses the point of value. Things are of value only when you use them, not simply because they cost you nothing."

When I first starting to read the book I started at the beginning with the idea of going from chapter to chapter to the end. But, after I started to read it I looked more closely at the index and found some subjects that I wanted to read now, not when I picked up the book again. And so I found myself referring to chapters as individual events and couldn't wait to pick up the book to find something else that caught my interest.

Each chapter can apply to everyone at one time or another in their lifetime. Mary has hit the mark on many levels with her assessment of the problems, and the "Why" it happens, which I believe is key to change,...and, then presents many solutions on how you can "fix" the situation one step at a time.

She is so right about not expecting to find an instant fix. Your home does not get cluttered instantly, you don't gain weight overnight, nor did you become an extension of every bit of technology taking over your life. It takes time to analyze the "What", "Why" and "How" to find a solution to bring peace and order in your life.

She has done the work for you and she makes the path easy. I can see myself reading it over and over again as life progresses and new challenges arise

It's so easy to overwhelm yourself trying to make positive change in your life. Our inclination is to scale a mountain before we've climbed a hill. In "Live More, Want Less" Mary Carlomagno takes the mountains and reduces them to hills which I can climb. The approach has led me to make real change in my life. The weekly format gives me achievable goals to focus on and Mary's personal stories have me laughing out loud.

If you're looking to declutter your closet and your life I recommend starting here.

Making Herbal Remedies (Herbology At Home Series)

Making Herbal RemediesAnke says that she considers herbology an amateur interest whereas herbalism is a professional pursuit. I was glad to hear someone else make the same differention as I do! I always consider myself an herbologist, one who studies herbs and no way would I be ready to consider myself an herbalist, if ever! But as Anke says, just because we consider herbology for amateurs does not mean it is any less effective or important! What Anke does say it represents is a continuation of an ancient tradition whereby herb lore is practiced by everyday people in everyday situations! Now that was truly speaking to me folks! Anke's aim is to help guide everyone in taking back our heritage of herbal medicine and passing it on to future generations!

The book is very well written and easy to read with clear instruction for making internal and external remedies. There are sections on infused oils, creams, first aid, children, tinctures, food as medicine and many others. Each is very helpful ready reference when you are making your own remedies at home. What I consider very useful is the fact I finally have a book in my home library that is so easy, and fast to use. Let's just say you have gathered some St. John's Wort and you can't remember right away how to infuse it in oil or fresh tincture it, just grab this book and you can immediately find the sections of the book to help! A ready reference with sound advice right at my fingertips! I am in love!

This is a very good first look at herbal medicine. The ratios in this book are quite precise and I actually use them in my own herbal medicines.

I have to say that making herbal remedies is never been something I would have thought I'd try but on a recent trip to Rio I met someone who told me there are herbs in the country and forest that will sort out any ailment, headache, hay fever or condition. Now I am back home I am finding I want to see if there are any methods of mixing and making herbal remedies that are available to me here.

I am tired of paying through the nose for expensive products that claim to be natural. I can make it myself now thanks to this book.
