In 49 brief but useful chapters, Wilcox covers the history of costume as worn in the ancient world, in Byzantium, in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and almost 400 years of (primarily) England and France--which, of course, were the major arbiters of fashion during that period, thanks to the ascendancy of Paris and the advent of Victorianism. Her beautifully detailed line drawings, though they might have benefited by being larger, are great for anyone who wants to be able to really visualize and understand how historic costume was put together. You absolutely can't go wrong if you have all of Wilcox on your shelf of costume reference, and Dover now makes it possible to have them in a uniform edition.
