This book, though, does not make those kinds of intense demands on the reader. It consists of a series of brief articles dealing with ways to support yourself or your child through stresses associated with diabetes.

Chapters include topics such as surviving the preteens, beating stress and dealing with negative thoughts. Each chapter is written by a different author.

I see this as a book you can keep in the bathroom, by the bed or in the car. One day you might want to spend five minutes reading about how to develop an exercise program. Another time, you might read about dealing with perfectionistic tendencies. Read the chapters in any order as you need them.

I must say I had higher expectations with this book. When I bought it I was -so to speakgoing under the ups and downs of the first few weeks after being diagnosed with Type 2, and upon reading comments and reviews I decided this book could help me through some of it.Well, it did in a sense, but after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly repetitive and, at times, even contradictory. The problem is that it's all made of essays, all of which are written by different people. This results in a true mix that more than once brings back concepts that already have been discussed, more precisely perhaps, the anger that a diabetic experiences and how to deal with it. By the fourth time I read about this, I was almost angry to find the topic discussed again! :) (not so much, but you get the point). Otherwise, it has some great advice. I would say it's best for someone who's on his or her first few days after diagnosis or someone who -regardlesscontinues to be on an emotional rollercoaster due to diabetes, or for parents of diabetic children. Not really the best resource for spouses of diabetics.

Practice Guidelines for Family Nurse PractitionersMy copy is used constantly for review. I update in margins since this is a 1997 copy and some changes in management have occurred. It is still a good reference Bible that I use daily.

I actually got online to see if there was a newer publication (found only 1997 one at first hope they correct that) mine is 2004 this is a very valuable book for me, simple, to the point but great ideas on so many things. I keep it as a tool for my every day practice and write notes in it patients love it when I show it to them and the "list" of interventions to make sure we don't miss something. I still have my larger books but they don't make the examroom! This is a wonderful book and a great resource for a quick look. D. Rogers, ARNP

I have had a lifelong interest in the wisdom traditions of the world and this was also part of my study. I also work with people having various kinds of sexual issues or seeking more fulfillment.

When I ordered this book, I had a mixed reaction to the reviews and I was honestly expecting not to like it. However, I found it to be quite refreshing, fun, extremely witty and also informative. It talks about real sex between real people and how sex can be used as a spiritual practice and tool for transformation.

Strickly speaking, tantra is path to spiritual transformation that uses the stuff of everyday life as a gateway to something more transcendant. There are many tantric practices and the sexual practices are only a small and rather minor subset of this overall topic. If you are looking for an a good introduction on this deeper tantra or for more context, see Introduction to Tantra : The Transformation of Desire. This is an excellent, concise and accessible introduction to traditonal tantra before it was imported to the West. Although it is written from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective, the concepts apply well to any type of traditional tantra.

Back to this book.... once I got beyond my resistance to it given my knowledge and biases toward traditional tantra, I found it to be a practical tool for people looking to find deeper meaning in sex. Tantra is sort of a buzz word in the West and has a technical definition in the East. However, the authors define Tantra as... "living, authentically, consciously and sensuously. And that can be done in an infinite variety of styles and practices, all of which can bring about prolonged states of love, connection and bliss." If I accept this definition and judge the merit of the book by their own definition, then it succeeds in describing a path for busy Westerner's who wish to find more meaning in relationship and/or sexuality in general.

This book also focuses on Tantra as "primarily concerned with inner mystical experiences, not relationships." As such, it does not have a gender bias or even a heterosexual bias. In the author's words, "Gender is not two bins into one of which everyone must be dumped. It is more like a rainbow spectrum along which everyone can find the particular shade of color that looks best on them." This quote crystallizes the openness, curiosity and acceptance that characterizes the overall tone of the writing.

If I had to summarize the content, I would say it's a collection of psychological, spiritual and practical insights. It challenges basic assumptions most of us have about sex and suggests alternatives, exercises and challenges to the cultural paradigm. Often times the language is edgy, explicit and politically incorrect. However, this doesn't detract from the content, my sense is that is an attempt to reach beyond the ignorance, shame and guilt that so often plagues people in this area of their lives.

While there is some information on the chakra system (subtle energy system), Eastern practices, etc., this is not another New Age book on this topic. In addition, this book contains very concrete tips, techniques, exercises and inquiries that most Western people could connect to.

In short, this is a very fun book. It is fun to read and you will learn a lot from it. Even if the language or suggestions at time seem too far out or don't fit for you, you will still find a lot of value. You may also be surprised that as you delve deeper into exploring this territory there are new vistas waiting for you. This is a nice blend of ancient wisdom, modern insight and down-to-earth sensuality. In my opinion, it is a successful fusion of wisdom old and new applied in a way that the average person can relate to.

If after you get done reading this you want to delve deeper into Kundalini yoga or approach the chakra system gently from a credible and understandable place, then you might enjoy Kundalini Awakening: A Gentle Guide to Chakra Activation and Spiritual Growth. This book is geared toward Westerner's who have difficulty relating to esoteric teachings. It provides an experiental guide to learning about chakras, kundalini, etc. It also explains some difficult concepts in easy to understand language and is written by an author with a gift for simplicity and practical application. You can also look at my listmania lists for other references, including in-depth scholarly ones.

And I have the book. This review is on Carrellas and her whole philosopy the book and the class. As for the book you can find anything in this book for free on the internet. It is nothing new at all. She spends some pages complaining about white-bread folks and making sure everyone knows she is a radical lesbian. Same old boring song and dance, "look at me, see how different I am!" She talks about learning advanced meditation techniques from masters. But if you have the smallest, most basic knowledge of Tibetan Buddhist tantra when you read this book, or see her and hear her rant in person, it pretty obvious that it is all made up hogwash...

I love meditation and I have had a psychic opening from practicing it. I have bliss-ed out during meditation; so I do know what it feels like. I have read all Lama Yeshe's books and I love him dearly. But I do not want to join the Buddhist religion or philosophy, so I keep searching. When I first got into Meditation, I skipped by these sex tantra books believing it to be an abuse of spiritual practices. Ive read extensively how some while practicing meditation & tantra will develop psychic abilities and siddhis and get so caught up in that ... that they never progress down the path any further. At the very least, I saw this type of thing as an annoying distraction that could turn counter productive and destructive.

So I went to this class Urban Tantra to see if I could get some first hand instructions on breathing techniques. The classes are advertised that way... as "breath work", so I was very excited to think I would learn something better or new.

Basically what the whole class amounted to was imagining or simulating sex by breathing heavy & fast *THROUGH THE MOUTH* and visualizing sex with some chakra stuff and kegel exercises thrown in. So if you want to try it, lay on the floor, breathe heavy and very very fast, and moan for a few hours and save your money. (This stimulates the lowest chakra only.)

I spent years training myself to properly nose breathe, it was extremely difficult to meditate and mouth breathe. But this really wasn't meditation anyway. Many people complained about tingling hands and feet Carrellas claimed this was from over-oxygenation and that breathing this way was good. If you search *mouth breathing* you will discover you lose 2/3 of your oxygen by mouth breathing and that it causes premature death and a host of diseases. This tingling wasn't from over-oxygenation it was from lack of oxygen.

And for part of the class, the single folks had to pair up with complete strangers and kinda dry hump and touch each other erotically the class was *not advertised* this way at all complete and utter dishonesty about the content of the class as it never mentioned that people would partner up with complete strangers and touch each other and sit on each others laps, etc... Over half the people would not have attended this class had the content of the class been available for perusal beforehand. Everyone talked about it at lunch break, and I hope some ask for their money back. This class could have easily been broken up into 2 slots, one for couples and one for singles, but I guess Carrellas wont make enough quick bucks that way, eh?

She called this dry humping the yab yum. I wonder if she thinks the Kalachakra is a standing sexual position? She lacks basic information about yin/yang, yab/yum, shiva/shatki and other such inner forces and she spent some time criticizing, in complete ignorance, what she thinks is a man/woman thing.

Anyway, the people that were least attractive, were publicly humiliated because no one wanted to partner up with them. And she even added some sarcastic comments to further humiliate them, as they headed off publicly humiliated and rejected by the whole class to their *alone* spot by the mirror. This broke my heart and showed me what raw ignorance really is. Anyone even a teeny tiny bit advanced would not have done this! I don't understand how anyone could miss the absolute horror of what that felt like for that poor women; I surely couldn't. I could not concentrate after that! The fact that most of the class didn't notice or plain didn't care... that they could wipe it right from their mind and continue on with this unfeeling, unthinking teacher that just publicly humiliated, and then brutalized an innocent women with vicious comments...and she even added in that *this* is the universal force that connects us all; NO IT IS NOT if WHAT you were teaching actually was the universal life force that connects us all you would NOT have been so heartless, brutal, and sarcastic to that women! NO, it isn't the universal force that connects us all if you knew this force in the slightest way, you could not have injured anyone in this way! On a side note, *good* teachers that I have seen will partner up with such single folks but most caring people would not put another human being in this predicament in the first place.

Hey what more can I say? If this is what mind or breath sex is.. I don't want it, folks. At least, not this author's brand of it. Be careful with this brand... knowledge is not wisdom.

She spent quite some time criticizing and polarizing anyone who wasn't gay or into extreme sexual practices a serious hangup with *normal* people was excessively apparent. Think of a lesbian version of Rosanne Barr teaching a class on faking sex... that sums it up pretty well.

"It gives liberation to Yogis and bondage to fools" The Hathayoga Pradipika. This quote is not kindly advice, but a dire warning. Kundalini is not something to toy with. It can cause excruciating physical pain and all kinds of mental problems on someone not completely and utterly spiritually ready for it. Search on "spiritual emergence" and read the personal stories.

This is not "Tantra". There are real teachers and good books out there this is not one of them.

I thought the book was good, but spent alot of the beginning alienating us boring white bread middle American straight people that may not work occasionally in the sex trade....I say this with a smile and a laugh.

If you are gay, into BDSM, etc. and want to expand on those alternatives with Tantra this book is awesome.....If you want pure Tantra, you can take what you need and leave the rest, or look elsewhere.

It's an easy, entertaining, quick read...and I never thought of myself as a prude, I love the energy information--although it's nothing I haven't learned elsewhere, I just felt a little side tracked at times....

For me personally, and again this is me, but I felt like BDSM worked better when I still clung to many of the issues I've worked through, and I see Tantra as a step beyond, so some of this book seemed like a step backwards.? I also look to Tantra to intesify a long term monogamous relationship, and this book often speaks otherwise. No judgement, just not where I am at this point in my life.

If you have already read some of my reviews, you know my favorite books feel like best friends and "Urban Tantra" rates as an excellent "bf" and a must have for anyone, what ever your sexual orientation is! If you want to raise your sexual IQ and ecstasy, do empowering exercises -one that uses rocking -which is a favorite, than rock it and read it. Barbara is so open, honest and fun. I loved Annie Sprinkle's "Spectacular Sex" and Annie writes the forward to this book and the women and the books compliment each other well. This book is great for couples and for "singles" because you can do the "home work" alone too which is important and some topics may not be your "thing" but you will get some great breathing excercises, imagining and understanding out of this terrific read!

I recommend this book highly and also doing the exercises for better sexual health, pleasure and empowerment. Like Annie and Nina Hartley, Barbara recommends affirmations and I agree and need to do so much more affirming work. I am carrying this book around with me everywhere and I recommend you do too!

Golden Fountain: The Complete Guide to Urine TherapyI won't go into the actual chapter by chapter content of this book, as reviewer 'Tepi' has already done an excellent job of that, but having steeled myself to try this therapy I have a few words to say regarding the effects.

Firstly it works. I don't believe this to be a placebo effect, as I've tried many other remedies for various ills, and none have delivered the amazing results that urine therapy has in just three months. My previously constant urinary tract irritation has disappeared at last, and my body feels much stronger. Recently I took an overseas trip where I was surrounded by people with the flu starting with all the air hostesses on the way out and culminating with most of my family upon my return. I didn't catch it, which for me is quite amazing, especially considering the stress I was under.

I find it perplexing that some reviewers and 'medical experts' are so dismissive of this therapy claiming that there is no scientific evidence to prove that it works. This seems to fly in the face of the fact that urine derivatives are used in a host of medicines that are prescribed by 'medical experts', and bought over the pharmaceutical counter by countless 'normal' people who would never entertain the idea of ingesting their own urine. However, horse urine or urine from other people (or derivatives thereof) are deemed (perhaps unknowingly) as perfectly acceptable. Go figure!

My advice to all of you out there who are suffering from chronic ailments that are unresponsive to orthodox therapy is go and buy this book, read it, and give the therapy a go. After all what do you have to lose? Even the most rabid 'expert' detractors will admit that it does no harm.

But do read the book before you start swilling down gallons of your own urine, as there are circumstances where a homeopathic dose, or rubbing on the skin is preferable to drinking. Especially if you happen to be on potent drugs of any sort.

I was enormously impressed by this book. Its author strikes me as a responsible and highly intelligent person who has made an important discovery and wishes, for humanitarian reasons, to make it known to the world.

Kroon first became interested in urine therapy in India after sustaining a serious injury to his foot. When instead of healing, the foot gradually grew worse, someone suggested that he use urine compresses. Having nothing to lose he decided to give it a try and it worked! He then set about researching the subject, both in India and the West, and 'The Golden Fountain The Complete Guide to Urine Therapy' brings us the fruits of his research and his years of practical experience.

Although not a large book it's packed with an enormous amount of fascinating and valuable information, too much to even begin to adequately describe. After a brief Introduction, Kroon takes up the history of Urine therapy in both the West where it was used to cure innumerable complaints in earlier centuries and in the East.

Urine, we learn, has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-cancer properties. Also, by strengthening the immune system and correcting the imbalance which underlies most disease, it can in many cases help to cure just about anything, and it has other valuable properties too.

A chapter on Applications is included which describes the various ways urine can be used, both internally and externally, to promote health, beauty, longevity, and even sexual potency! Detailed instructions are given on drinking, bathing, gargling, douching, eye and ear drops, sniffing, massage, compresses, rubbings, foot and hip baths, scalp and hair massages, and other applications.

Chapter 5 is devoted to the 'Medical and Scientific Aspects of Urine Therapy.' In it we learn that urine, far from being the nasty stuff most of us suppose, is a veritable natural pharmacy. It is a sterile liquid, filtered from the blood by our kidneys, and consists of energized structured water plus upwards of some 200 substances.

Among these substances are such things as amino acids, proteins, enzymes, vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, B6,B12, ascorbic acid, etc.), hormones (gonadotropin, vasopressin, cortisone, testosterone, oestrogen, etc.) urea, allantoin, DHEA, H-11, HUD, Interleukin, prostaglandin, and so on.

Kroon's is a remarkably rich and interesting book, contains much about the How's and Why's and Wherefore's that I haven't been able to touch on here, and it can be heartily recommended to all open-minded readers. The book is also extremely well written, has a useful general bibliography, and contains a number of interesting photographs, including one of the author.

His glowing complexion would be the envy of many, and you'd be hard put to find a more vibrant, healthy-looking and bright-eyed individual. One begins to feel that, if this is what urine therapy can do for one's health, well-being, and appearance it might just be worth a try!

I used this therapy to help break my heroin addiction, and now I use it to maintain a positive, healthy lifestyle. There have been no relapses, and cravings I've felt in the past just aren't there this time around. If you have any type of addiction, from food to sex, this is the book for you.

this is for those people instantly disgusted by the idea of drinking a warm glass of urine in the morning.

1stly the treatment can also be done with drops under the tongue, starting with 1 on the first day and progressing. I have not read this particular book (have read Harald Tietze's "Urine the Holy Water") and he outlines different methods of taking it.

I write the review for this book because I see so many people bagging this method of treatment.

I had a skin problem on my genitals since the age of 4. I was on modern medicine for most of my life, and have been hit with every kind of antibiotics and cream you can imagine (which has all built up in my body and caused other problems). In short nothing worked. I changed first my diet to organic veggies and fruits, cut out all the junk, then moved to alternative therapies tried the parasite zapping (see Hulda Clarkes books) and the herbal teas, oxygen supplements, colloidal silver, colloidal minerals, wheatgrass, the whole works. All of these are fantastic things and have really helped my body regain it's vitality I cannot remember feeling so good at any point in my life. But still the skin rash persisted...... Last week bought the urine book. Got over my squeamishness and started drinking a glass full every morning. I aint gonna be all girly about it and do the drops under the tongue, gonna do the whole thing! 5 days later... skin rash gone. No bullsh*t.

Now apart from the recycling of hormones, amino acids, etc... my personal theory of why it works is that it's kind of a feedback thing. The first two days of taking it I could taste it all day, very strange feeling (but tastes better than wheatgrass anyway). I think as it passes through the thyroids your body gets a chance to reanalyse itself and then make adjustments. Just a theory... but remember ALWAYS that science is incomplete, there is still much we cannot explain. Most doctors and scientists tend to claim something doesn't work or exist if they can't explain it... eventually they can though and grudgingly they have to face the fact that the particular person of the time making these remarkable claims was right. It has happened so many times in history, every great mind that has influenced the way we now view the world was initially ridiculed.

So get over yourselves and if you haven't tried it, don't knock it until you do. Fine don't believe it works, but don't deny it to other people either because you have no experience of it, so YOU CANNOT KNOW.

I have recently begun sharing caregiver duties for a terminally ill parent and recommend this book as perhaps the best single introduction I have found. Looking at thirteen years of full-time undergraduate and post-graduate work, I found I had not a single hour of instruction in how to navigate the emotional and technically difficult art of caring for a terminally ill patient. Such caring is not given much coverage in today's world, and I have to admit I was nearly clueless as the process began. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to those who are beginning this potentially beautiful yet potentially treacherous path, either as a caregiver or a patient. The book is a tremendous "how-to" resource and elementary caregiving, and it provides a decent list resources for further information. I hope to use the book to prepare my own way as well. My only criticism is it gives little help in things like preparing eulogies or funeral etiquette, and it gives little help in managing the sibling difficulties which can arise during the process of caregiving.

My Sister and I both owned this book and read it to each other over the phone (we live in different towns) so that we could make sure we were both viewing our Mother's death in the same way. I was actually caring for her, but she was very involved with my endless decisions I had to make. That was very helpful in showing me I wasn't alone.

Now, unfortunately, I have to use it again because my dear Sister is dying. I have recommended this book to her 6 children who will be caring for her. This guide will help them as it did me, when they have a question in the middle of the night, or on the weekend when they can't reach the doctor. I know I would have made it without this book, but it sure made my life better!

Advanced Bodyweight Exercises: An Intense Full Body Workout In A Home Or GymI used to always be frustrated because I felt like I couldn't get in a really good workout without going to a gym. I was hoping to find a book that would teach me something a little more challenging than the 'typical' bodyweight workout. I feel like that kind of exercise is useful, but it's always seemed a little bit too easy.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I feel like I've learned a routine that I'll always be able to use no matter what equipment is available, and the pictures and descriptions always made it clear exactly how to do the exercises.

One thing I liked was that for some of the exercises, just developing the balance and strength to do one repetition was rewarding. It's definitely gratifying to do an exercise and feel like you're learning a new skill at the same time, which is something I don't really get out of weight training.

I don't think I'm going to give up other types of training altogether, just because I enjoy them, but the exercises I've learned in this book have definitely earned a permanent spot in my regular routine. Anybody who wants to learn some challenging bodyweight exercises could benefit from this book.

They mentioned about five different "secrets" throughout the book more than once. Let me save you the fourteen bucks and give you the skinny on the "secrets"

3) Strawberry Jello :Lip and nipple stain...I kid you not!

These "secrets" were mentioned numerous times. The "authors" talked to stars and make-up people and they either said they used Creme De La Mer or were trying to push their own products. It seemed like one big ad. All in all, I'm really disappointed...95% filler...5% meat!

I thought this book would be entertaining with a lot of tips and tricks for making beauty fun and easy. I love makeup and skincare. People's go-to "I didnt know what to get" gift for me is usually a sephora gift card, so you can tell this type of book should be straight up my alley. I'm overjoyed to be poking around Sephora or Ulta, but I can also be happy wandering the makeup/skin care aisles of Target or Walmart.

When this book is not spitting out designer labels left and right, they really don't have super secrets. Most is stuff you can find online about home treatments that you can mix together yourself. It also asked a lot of "professionals" and beauty gurus their "must haves" and what would they buy if they ONLY had 100 dollars. These people are spoiled brats in my opinion. 100 bucks could buy a heck of a lot of beauty stuff. One woman's answer when asked what she would do if she only had the 100 dollars was "first, I would cry...". This really just put the stamp of stupidity on this book. Don't waste your money!

A Fine Mess: Living Simply With ChildrenI don't have kids but that didn't stop me from enjoying and learning from A Fine Mess: Living Simply With Children. I love memoirs, simple living books, and homesteading tales. A Fine Mess hits on all three. Though she references another favorite of mine Helen and Scott Nearing's Living the Simple Life Hogan's family hasn't gone completely off the grid by any means. Instead, her story is one of living more thoughtfully while still being part of the modern world. There's plenty of valuable advice any of us can benefit from. The book is well written with a friendly, engaging tone. Highly recommended.

This was well-written and an enjoyable read about living simply in Vermont (with principles that can be applied anywhere) and finding out that you don't need more money to be happy.

I was invited to write a review for an upcoming book by fellow blogger, Michelle Kennedy Hogan a while ago. Her title peaked my curiosity, "A Fine Mess: Living and Parenting Simpler, Greener, Cheaper and Wiser," because this is my own mission -to help my children and me to live simply, albeit the mess maybe. My favorite quote from the book is: "In the effort is the example, I believe." And so I leave this with you as you contemplate Michelle's new book.

She starts out by asking a few questions: What does money mean to my family? And what is our definition of success? Or how does one go from "making a living to making a life?" These are all questions I've already asked myself, but if I am honest haven't really answered. But Michelle does.

A large part of the book speaks to green and inexpensive ways to raise a baby. Even a checklist on how to save money with a newborn and all the stuff they seem to need. At one point I started to get discouraged with all the nurturing, inspirational advice that I wished I'd had when I was pregnant. Where was this book then?! But don't despair if your kids are over five, as mine are, there are other fabulous insights shared on living your core values and raising kids simply, like eating well and instilling work ethic and joy of learning in the children.

There's a wonderful section on self-employment and creating multiple streams of income for yourself. As I read it I had my own list going and I'm happy to report I quickly came up with 20 products or services I could sell at our local Saturday/Farmer's Market.

She neatly parries the thrusts of "But I don't have enough money to start my own business" with multiple examples of small businesses I'd never thought of that could be run on a "shoestring" to start out.

Michelle includes charming anecdotes from her life -like how she came to not be a cattle rancher, and the first time she tried making maple syrup. These are both enjoyed for their humility and humor, but also for the inside look at what living on a farm would be like (something I secretly crave).

And on days when she feels like hiding under the covers, her simple message still does not change. Instead she remembers why she does it. It is her unswerving belief that learning to live this type of lifestyle and "keeping these skills alive is so important in these times of great uncertainty." That "[surviving and living] without having to depend on Walmart or the grocery store to come to our aid" is the right and true course.

But what I really appreciate about Michelle Hogan's writing style in "A Fine Mess" is there is no heavy-handedness. No judgement. And that while she grows most of her food and raises chickens and sheep for meat and eggs, she's not adverse to fudge-covered Oreos and t.v.!

And she's honest: "So rather than try and be the bastion of simple and ecological living, I try and make the changes where I can and make the effort. In the effort is the example, I believe. By home-schooling, growing our food, cooking from scratch, bringing our own bags to the store, recycling, reusing, not buying what we don't need, buying used, not going into debt and the like I hope to balance out the areas where we are not so green or thrifty." (For her this is driving an SUV -but what other rig would hold nine people?!)

Read this book. You'll come away with a charged mission and new life goals -or at the very least the desire to buy (or make!) a baby sling.

I liked the overall message in the book and many of the stories were entertaining an easy read and the book kept my interest. The reason I give it three stars is that there were several typos and a numbered list that just sort of appeared out of nowhere. In some chapters, the writing seemed like a first draft and it just didn't seem to flow. I think it could have been better with some further editing. I'd still recommend it for the content if weak editing won't totally annoy you.

I learned many things through this book that my mom had a hard time explaining. This book made it easy for me to explain topics to my own daughter (who is now 21) and who felt freely to talk to me about any subject, and still does. This book I passed to my daughter who remembers reading it as a pre-teen. We reference things in the book today since i have a step-daughter who is a pre-teen. I will now purchase a book for her very own. To the moms out there, do yourself and your child a favor and purchase this book. It is a great reference for the both of you.

I purchased this book for my nephew so that he would gain an understanding of the pysical and emotional changes he would be going through. The material was presented in a tactful, educational, yet interesting to a teen boy manner. I just asked my nephew if we should pass this book to his newly 13 year old nephew and he said "yes!"

I bought a copy of this for my boys when they were about 12 and 9 years old.That was nearly 30 years ago,now I am getting one for my grand-daughters. I think it was one of the very best purchases I ever made! The title is a little decieving,as it covers far,far more than just their changing bodies,and in a plain language that they can understand and relate to. Kids get so much mis-information from one another,but my kids and their friends would check to see "if thats really true" in 'The Book'! So glad it is still around!

My mother gave me this book when I was a teenager. I am now 42 years old. She never said anything about it-she just left it in my room. I was so relieved that I didn't have to go to her with those embarrassing questions (well I just wouldn't have asked). She was right to trust this book to help answer the many questions I had as a teenager. I remember my friends sleeping over and how we would pour over the information in this book. The Pilates Body: The Ultimate At-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--Without MachinesPhenomenal and most of all do-able. This Pilates book has the best explanations and illustrations of all the ones out there. I know, I was in the mall and I checked them out.

I bought this book over 6 months ago, as I felt I needed more than just a regular workout on an elliptical machine. I wrote a review on it shortly after I started and I wanted to update that as a number of people have emailed me for more information.

Some background. I'm 43, female and 25% overweight, not exactly your svelte exerciser, so I knew I needed a routine that wouldn't hurt but would would get results. I work in an office and nothing is worse than sitting at your desk all day aching from the previous day's exercises.

I started as recommended with Modified beginner exercises, the seven basic exercises and did this for about 3 weeks. No pain but some tightness I could feel in my abdomen. As I became confident, I moved onto the regular beginner exercises. Basically, I used my ability to do the "hundred" as a measure of when I was able to move on. I could see my progress from day to day. It was really neat. I did the exercises at least 5 days/week.

As time went on I added more exercises from the full program. One or two each week depending on if they were similar or really hard to do. Some were, some weren't. Still no pain. I am now doing almost all (over 95%) of all, but the advanced exercises at least 5 days/week along with my elliptical machine routine and some weight lifting for my arms. I don't have time, I make time. In my opinion, this is as important as paying my bills. In someways, this is just what I'm doing.

One question, I have been asked is am I seeing muscle definition. The answer is definitely yes. I am still overweight. I'm working on that too (I've lost 25 pounds through just exercising), so I'm not seeing a washboard stomach, as the fat above the muscles are still obscuring them, but I can see definition of my ribs and hips, along with distinct muscles in between. This is nothing I've ever seen before, even in my skinny high school days.

One interesting measure of how far I've gone is watching my teenage children trying to mock me doing the exercises. Both are slim and in good shape, but neither can dive in and do the intermediate exercises that I'm doing with the same ease I am. In fact they are shocked they can't do more than a couple repetitions. Not because it hurts so much, but because they have not build up the strength.

That is another thing that I mentioned in my previous review, these exercises provide the feedback you need to continue on. You see it in each day in each exercise as they become easier. Also you see it in your day to day tasks.

For me, it was an excellent investment.

I've been interested in Pilates for a long time, but don't live anywhere near a trainer (and couldn't afford it anyway)

I read article after article until I finally purchased Sean P. Gallagher's book on Pilates.

I was so disappointed.

There was so much to concentrate on for each exercise, and so many to go through. And no matter what I did it meant purchasing expensive equipment within a few weeks (thousands of dollars worth...) I tried for a few days and then gave up in disgust.

Then I read a review for "The Pilates Body." What can I say, everything that has been said is true!

Siler recommends taking all the time you need to learn the movements, she provides modified exercises for beginners to build up to the actual exercises and she gives a much more indepth account of Pilates system than I've ever seen before.

The information on visualization and the mental aspect of a workout is not present in any other materials I have seen.

There is no strict program provided (a plus or bonus depending on how you look at it...) instead the reader is encouraged to progress at their own pace, not moving on until they have the previous movements down. Finally, instead of trying to sell the expensive equipment, Siler is the ONLY Pilates trainer I've EVER seen who says that the original system never had equipment, and that the matwork alone can give a complete workout.

I now have confidence in my ability to perform the exercises properly and effectively (though it'll take a long time, I think it will be worth it)

This has become one of my favorite books, it is so well written and effective, and most of all Warm and friendly.

Ms. Siler's book is probably the most inspirational exercise/spiritual motivator that I've come across in a while. Siler has developed a program that is easy to follow, feels great and (most important) is something I really enjoy fitting into my day. I've dabbled in Pilates before but since moving to a small town, I haven't found the program locally. I'm delighted to have access to it again through The Pilates Body--the exercises are easy to follow and the book is well laid out. Check out the "no-nos" that alert you to ways you may be doing the exercises incorrectly. Most exercise books don't include these types of tips. I highly recommend Siler's book.

The clear, well written directions in The Pilates Body led me to immediately retrain my breathing. As I sat at my desk at work I could practice. Then I could easily recall that simple direction as I stood to walk. By concious awareness of the directions given by Ms. Sidler, I was able to eliminate pain from my knee and arthritic hip. And that's before I even got home where I could practice the basic exercises in The Pilates Body.

I found it easy to look at the pictures and directions while moving through the routines.

I especially appreciate the beginning beginners section. It encourages me to go on when I might become overwhelmed by the full routine. The conditions in my left leg have made most exercise difficult or impossible. But with the above mentioned improvement, I have recommended the book to others, and plan to give it to my daughters.

The choice of paper stock use for the cover and body of the book is so enjoyable to touck; it just adds one more dimension to the total pleasure this books brings to my life.

As a complete novice on Pilates and its background I started looking at all the books I could on the subject a few months ago. I had read about Pilates in the Daily Telegraph the first time I had ever heard of the programme.

There are two points I have to make as a novice 1 -I'd never heard of Pilates before and so I wanted to read as much as I could and try things out before I bought and 2 there are some very very good books out there on the subject . So I am definitely not an expert opinion here but just an enthusiastic amateur. And I am enthusiastic about it.

First off if you haven't tried Pilates before like I hadn't I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by just how easy and fun the exercises are. Every book I read emphasised the need to move up the level of difficulty slowly which means I have made very noticeable improvements, but I really enjoy the exercises each day. Its a bit like yoga and certainly uses some parts of yoga in the exercises only I find I domy Pilates exercises where I never really liked yoga that much.

Why do I like this book better than the others I used? Well I found the programme and the explanations which Siler used the best. Each Pilates book I read seemed to have slightly different combinations of exercises and different orders but all the exercises are essentially the same so I don't know if there is really that much basic difference in them. In the end I just preferred the order and the presentation of Siler's book. She has all the philosophy of and explanations of Pilates in the first few pages. What I liked best though was the is a two page 'order' of exercises where each exercise is a small picture to remind you of where you are up to.

Following that each exercise is given a double page spread with one page devoted to what to do put in simple bullet points, and the facing page a bullet point list of things to concentrate on while doing the exercise.

So while I did like many of the other Pilates books I found this one the best.

Plenty to learn in this book about how to train yourself and others. Lots of terms and definitions so you can work on your brain as well as your body. This book is good for the beginner. I would recommend it for someone who is looking at putting in a pool as it gives you the basics so you understand what they are talking about when you make your basic selections with your contractor and are given your basic pool care instructions. The daily maintenance information is simplified. I would have appreciated a more detailed explanation of daily care; however, the sections on closing a pool for the winter and opening up for the spring are nicely done. The author does recommend checking with your pool professional on issues that you don't understand or can't answer. This is not a book for someone who wants to eliminate going to the pool supply store and having them answer your questions. You'll just need them less with the information in this book.

I own a home with a large spa in the basement. When I purchased the home, the spa was not filled with water, and since I had no experience maintaining pools or spas, I read this book to give me some general operating tips. Although the book is not written to explain details concerning all complex pool and spa maintenance procedures, it is an excellent introduction for the novice pool or spa owner.

It is true that the author sometimes refers the reader to a trained pool professional, but I think that is appropriate given the range of possible complications. He also recommends getting a periodic professional water analysis (most pool shops will do this free or at very reasonable cost) as the chemical sticks are good for only fairly basic information. One of the strengths of the book is the explanation of the basic applied chemistry involved in pool maintenance.

After reading this book and getting a water analysis, I have been confidently enjoying the hot tub. Overall, I recommend this book for all pool and spa owners, especially novices. People with a lot of experience with pools may desire a more advanced text, but I think this one works great for probably 99 percent of the pool and spa owners out there.

This is a good book if you need to know the basics about a pool. But it's not real technical, it did not provide enough information no how to get or keep the chemicals correct in the pool. But if you're like me and did not know anything about your pool it is a very good starter guide for you.

Sex Made Easy: Your Awkward Questions Answered-For Better, Smarter, Amazing SexThis is a book that I cannot recommend highly enough, and I plan on buying multiple copies of it as "loaners" that I won't expect to receive back. It is just that good.

Full disclosure: I was already familiar with Dr. Debby Herbenick's work as I write for her blog (Mysexprofessor.com). She's been wonderful to work with so I suppose I am already predisposed to like her and her take on things. On the flip side, by engaging with lots of sex education/research, I've learned to be critical of this kind of writing, so if something seems wrong or improperly reasoned through, I'll spot it!

First, this book is very easy to read and accessible. Debby's tone is informal, and the book is very well-written, making it a pleasure to read. At the same time, she carefully (but unobtrusively) cites her sources and lets us know where her facts come from. Debby does a great job of dispelling misinformation and replacing "sex myths" with enlightened opinions and facts. Nothing Debby writes is ever judgmental, which is great because it helps the reader keep an open mind rather than feel defensive about being interested in a particular topic.

The book is well-organized, with chapters on women's and men's anatomy, orgasms, partner sex, sexual health, logistics, and things like fantasies and sex toys. Throughout the book, Debby emphasizes that sex is a normal and healthy part of human life. Even behaviors that may seem abnormal or perverted are often quite common, and can be explored safely and healthily with some simple guidelines (mostly involving communication and consent). Debby's use of personal anecdotes throughout the book--both her own and others from her research or friends that she has permission to ethically share--helps demonstrate the variety of sexual responses and experiences out there.

I learned a lot from reading this book, including a few surprising things. I hadn't been expecting such extensive information on sex during the various stages of pregnancy, or how pet ownership can affect sex. Since I've never been pregnant nor had pets as an adult, I hadn't imagined that these issues could be quite so complex, but they are, and I applaud Debby's dedication to bringing them to our attention. Other information, such as the detailed and up-to-date section on STIs (sexually transmissible infections), was quite sobering but good to know about.

I could go on with the interesting examples, but I'd just be rewriting the book in this review, which is unnecessary since a) it's already well-written in the first place, and b) you should get your own copy to read!

A real eye opener to the questions that are being asked today by the kids at or pas puberty we thought we had it figured out.

Every up coming generation seems to think sex was never discovered before.

Pretty informative overall, but was written more for women. Even the parts about men are written with the idea of a woman reading them to share the information with her partner rather than a man reading to learn something about himself. But besides that I repeat it's an informative book none the less.

FrameWork for the Knee: A 6-Step Plan for Preventing Injury and Ending PainI recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and although I had professional therapy afterwards I was looking for a book I could refer to and perhaps learn more about the knee. I had to wait for this book to be published as it was brand new, but well worth the wait. It is clearly written and has loads of information on the knee and ways to protect it and strengthen it. I highly recommend it.

This was the fourth book I read regarding knee injury and rehab, and by far the best. All gave basic anatomical info on various knee injuries, but this is the one for those who want to put themselves back on a course for vigorous physical activity. DiNubile provides not only the background, but a course of action for us middle-age athletes with osteoarthritis, as well as others with specific injuries. If you are going to buy one book, this is it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has torn their ACL & have other knee issues. This is the best book I've found to date, containing current (2010/11) information, exercises, and checklists to gauge predisposing factors. I wish this book was manadory for all highschool gym teachers, and any person involved in teaching young adults pivoting and running sports. In my opinion the information here should be taught to all young athletes. It is truly aimed at baby boomers as well...and gives an "AFTERWORD" addressing upcoming advances in treatment. This is one of two books I believe is worth owning, but if you want to be sure, you can probably find it in your library. I truly found this book exceptionally well laid out.

Well written and easy to understand. Provided me good information to help understand what is going on with my knee and allowed me to ask intelligent questions. Talked to my doctor and physical therapist about items in the book.

Would recommend to anyone with knee problems or someone wanting/needing to understand what is going on with a friend or family member.

I bought this book for the reviews I read. I would say the content is very good. the doctor does a good job teaching you; but, the quality of the binding is terrible. I already have loose pages. content 5 stars, binding 1 star. average 2 stars.

Everyday Dress of Rural America, 1783-1800: With Instructions and PatternsI ordered this book a few weeks ago. I have been looking for books to help make costumes to take my grandchildren to reenactments, which has stimulated their intrest in history. This book is the most balanced book I have seen-in that it tells you what you want to know, why it was what it was, and it is easy to read and understand. It covers men and women's clothing, with illustrations and graft patterns, along with fabrics and sewing techniques. I find this book delightful with information put in a fun and usable way. There are not enough book's that I have found on everyday dress, so this is a great and much needed addition.

I really like the way that this book is laid out. It has a very basic overview with sample patterns. The one big disappointment is that there is no pattern for the outer gown worn by women. There is a discussion of such, but the author refers you to other sources saying "...bearing in mind that these sources show English and French rather than American examples." I purchased this book specifically for American examples, so this was a surprise. Otherwise, I do really like the book.

This book was not what I expected. it had basic drawings of a few garments from colonial america and showed some native american garments. I wish it had more in it. It was very short and I expected it to have more pictures of the clothing in it.

The book offers some history, practical info and helps and basic information on 18th century dress. It isn't the best book on the subject that I've seen but a very good one to have.

The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide: A Quick Reference to Foods & Their Effect on pH LevelsThis book gives a concise description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system "in balance". pH means "potential for hydrogen", a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are "acid based". The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) a reading of 7.0 is neutral.

Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth.

The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. Dr. Brown lists about 70 pages of foods we eat, and rates them according to whether the food is alkaline-forming or acid-forming. The first time I read through the list, I determined that I could not eat any food without running the risk of forming more acids in my system. To remedy this, Dr. Brown suggest that we eat more dark green vegetables than any other food group. She doesn't require me to give up meat or eggs or nuts, so long as 2/3rd of my plate contains foods that are alkaline-forming (such as kale, collard greens, mustard greens, asparagus, snap green beans, etc.).

Dr. Brown explains the basis for her conclusions. Our bodies have 3 methods of getting rid of unwanted "poisons", or acid forming chemicals, all of which are filtered through our bodies:

First, our lungs supply our bodies with much needed oxygen (as we breathe in), and dispel (exhale) carbon dioxide (the "burned" waste from our system an inference might be made that aerobic exercise helps cleanse our system, because it requires lots of heavy breathing, which gives us a double dose of oxygen; in turn the CO2 expels the oxidized stuff we don't need);

Second, our kidneys filter unwanted sugars, and other waste products which we don't need (we rid our systems through urine a preventative measure we can take is to drink lots of pure, and hopefully ionized or ozone rich water, which will keep our kidneys healthy, as well as supply needed oxygen to our systems); and

Third, our skin filters out other things, through our perspiration (which is also produced through exercise).

With the information in this book, we will understand the importance of pH balance, have a list of foods and corresponding indicators as to whether the foods produce acid or alkaline with our systems, and gain a better appreciate of the components of good health.

I purchased this book for myself then bought two more copies for friends. I read the book cover to cover and used a highlighter pen. The book can get a little redundant so I highlighted my friends' copies and told them that would give them all the info they need. I love the food guide in the back. I have changed the way I eat and I have noticed a big difference. One thing I would recommend is purchasing narrow range pH strips in .2 increments at the same time as you order this book. This is because they walk you through tests that require these and, if you are like me, you will be anxious to get started as you are reading the book. they also sell them at Whole Foods Market.

This little book is nearly perfect. Starts with 75 pages of theory & then 100 pages of tables of foods. It is short enough to be immediately useful, scientific enough to please fussy me, and complete enough to make me wish I hadn't read "The pH Miracle" (the pH Miracle fails on being scientific).

Not too hot, not too cold; just right!

I had a friend who recently had amazing success on the "The pH Miracle" diet plan, and I have a history of moderately high cholesterol, so I talked with my doctor and decided to try the plan myself. This book appeared to be a useful reference to support that plan.

Because I have a strong background in chemical engineering research, I was highly skeptical of the "claims" made by "The pH Miracle", and quite honestly, I found no substantial research to back them up; however, I did find a wide body of evidence supporting the benefits of vegetarian diets, so I am continuing my trial. Actual pH control of (1) the GI system, by secretions in the stomach and intestines, of (2) the blood, by the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the lungs under the contorol of respiration, and of (3) the urine to prevent the accumulation of acids and bases in the blood from threatening pH control by respiration, is much more complex then any of these authors addresses, and the research they cite is quite limited.

One area of concern I identified is that many sources publish so-called acidifying/alkalizing food lists, and they conflict in many important areas. At least this book was based on a correlation (not actual experiments for each food) developed from actual research performed by the author. The book is also fairly complete, though it repeats listings under different categories to make itself appear like more information than it really is.

Many of the other lists I have found track themselves back to research done by a german nutritionist in the first half of the twentieth century. I have not been able to find a paper to determine his experimental methods, but apparently, he was interested in human health and was given credit for training some athletes.

In general, I recommend you continue your vegetarian pursuits, and take all this pH stuff with a grain of salt, or perhaps some potassium bicarbonate.
